Nick Reiner

Nick Reiner, the son of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, was diagnosed with schizophrenia just weeks before his parents’ murder, TMZ reports, adding that the medication he was taking was making him “erratic and dangerous.”

“Two sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ … Nick was under the care of a psychiatrist for mental illness,” the outlet added. “We’re told in the month before the murders, Nick’s behavior had gotten ‘alarming.’”

TMZ went on to add that Nick “received care at a Los Angeles-based rehab facility that specializes in mental illness and substance abuse,” and “3 to 4 weeks before the murders, doctors changed his meds, and he became even more erratic.” Doctors continued to try and adjust his medication, but “it wasn’t working.”

“One source told TMZ … once the meds were changed, “Nick was out of his head,” they added. “Our sources also say Nick’s substance abuse was worsening the schizophrenia.”

Rob Reiner and Nick Reiner Worked On ‘Being Charlie’ Together, Which Was Based on Nick’s Experiences With Addiction

In 2016, Rob Reiner directed a movie that was co-written by his son Nick, and was based on his struggles with addiction and homelessness. And in an interview about the movie, Rob opened up about the project.

It was very personal,” Reiner told TODAY during a 2016 appearance. “What I didn’t understand is the depth of what [Nick] was going through.”

“The process of making this film not only forced me to see what he was experiencing, but I think it forced him to see what I went through and what his mother went through,” he added. “Hopefully the film is a reflection of that.”

‘Being Charlie’ Film Producers Opened Up The Film

‘Being Charlie’ was a very personal film for Rob and Nick, considering the personal experience they both had with this topic. And when speaking with the New York Times, a few producers on the movie opened up about this project.

“‘Being Charlie’ was a passion project for Rob, and he made that movie for his son is all I can tell you,” Charles Berg, one of the film’s producers, told the outlet. “That was his gift back to the world — to acknowledge his son, to say, ‘I love you, and I want to share your story.’”

“It felt very personal, and it felt very intimate,” Blythe Frank, an executive producer on the movie, added. “Everybody was invested in what was a kind of family project.”

“I think he was really trying to understand him,” she continued. “He was trying to bring him into the fold, give him an opportunity.”
