To state the obvious, the New York Jets will be looking for another quarterback yet again this upcoming offseason.
Past searches have not yielded the best results.
The Justin Fields experiment obviously flamed out. Trading for Aaron Rodgers was the right thought process, but that also ended poorly.
If the Jets don’t end up picking high enough in the 2026 NFL Draft, they’ll be forced to either sacrifice their draft capital to trade up for one of the rookie signal callers or, once again, take the veteran route.
Well, Heavy’s Max Dible proposed a trade idea for the Jets to land a high-upside Philadelphia Eagles quarterback who could be had for a Day 2 pick.
Jets Trade Idea Lands Eagles QB Tanner McKee
To solve the New York Jets quarterback woes, Dible proposed acquiring the Philadelphia Eagles’ Tanner McKee.
“Tanner McKee is a viable NFL starter and trade candidate, per the Tuesday, December 9 edition of ‘The Mina Kimes Show featuring Lenny.’ McKee is 1-0 as an NFL starter, 30-of-45 passing for more than 300 yards, 4 TDs and zero INTs over his three career appearances,” wrote Dible.
“He also had a great showing against the Bengals in Philly’s preseason opener and is only 25 years old. He is an accurate passer who Kimes said can run just about any offense in the league. If the Jets don’t land in the top two picks and get either Mendoza or Moore, McKee is a solid play for a Day 2 draft pick who could end up as good as any starter in the 2026 class when it’s all said and done.”
Since being selected with the 188th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Stanford, McKee has done nothing but raise his stock during his time in Philadelphia.
As Dible noted, his breakout game came in Week 18 of last year, when he diced up the New York Giants to the tune of 269 yards and two touchdowns.
While maybe not the long-term answer at quarterback, McKee could be a servicable bridge quarterback for New York as they continue to navigate their trigger-man conundrum.
Even if they do draft a quarterback in 2026, McKee could start the season if the rookie isn’t ready or spot-start in case of injuries.
Would the Eagles Move on From Tanner McKee?
If McKee is so good, why would the Philadelphia Eagles want to trade their backup project?
Thanks to Jalen Hurts’ contract, Philadelphia is stuck with its Super Bowl MVP until at least 2027, despite some cries to move on from him.
It’s not like McKee is going to steal the starting gig from their $255 million man, and the Eagles are better off getting draft capital for his services rather than letting him walk as a free agent at the end of next season.
Dible has the trade compensation listed as a Day 2 pick, meaning that it could fall anywhere between a second or third-round selection.
That pick could go a long way in restocking some of the Eagles’ veteran-heavy positions or provide valuable depth.
Especially if that pick comes from the New York Jets, it will fall fairly high at the top of either round.
