There has been a lot of attention on Rob Reiner and Michele Singerâs middle child, son Nick Reiner, after their sudden and tragic deaths on Sunday, December 14. Nick was arrested and charged with the murders of his parents, and a spotlight has been shone on who he is and what he has done.Â
Nick has previously spoken about his struggles with addiction, which even led to brief stints of homelessness. In 2016, he was sober and talking about his collaboration with his father on the film âBeing Charlie.â The movie gives an insight into addiction, and although it was not an accurate portrayal of Nickâs life, it was something he penned because of his experiences. Who was Nick? And why does a producer feel that his parents would want forgiveness for his alleged actions?
Nick Reinerâs Parents Wanted the Best for Him
GettySomeone who worked with Nick around the time of “Being Charlie” is producer Douglas Shaffer, who described him as being a âgentle guyâ in an interview with People.
He shared why he thought Rob and Michele would want eventual forgiveness for their son over this âabsolute Hollywood tragedy.â
âThere’s lots and lots of healing that needs to be done,â Shaffer told People. âI think they would probably want people to feel empathy towards Nickâs struggles. And perhaps forgiveness down the road.â
Shaffer also discussed who Rob was as a father, calling him âproudâ and a âloving father, along with Michele â she was a loving mother⦠Nick had a good support system, as far as I knew.â Although Nick had people around him who loved him, Shaffer says that Rob âstruggled to understandâ Nickâs addiction issues. âI think he was trying to find the best way to help his son. He wasn’t sure if he should be more demanding on [things like] getting into rehab. [Rob] took more of a loving approach.â
Shaffer revealed that Nickâs parents wanted the best for him, and they wanted him to be happy. âRob just wanted Nick to be safe. He just wanted him to be safe and happy. ⦠It’s just a shame, because all he wanted was the best for Nick,â he said.Â
Remembering Rob Reiner & Michele Singer
GettyIf Nick is to be forgiven, that is something his siblings will have to determine later. He is the middle child and has an older brother, Jake Reiner, and a younger sister, Romy Reiner. They are also half-siblings to Tracy Reiner, Robâs daughter from his previous marriage.Â
Jake and Romy have released a statement about their absolute heartache after their parentsâ deaths. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they told People. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
