Actor Kiefer Sutherland has paid tribute to Hollywood legend Rob Reiner, fondly recalling how the filmmaker was able to capture a scene in the 1992 film “A Few Good Men” that left all those involved gobsmacked.

The star of the hit drama series “24” was taking part in a special tribute to the late filmmaker following his tragic death. Rob and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead last Sunday on on December 14. Their son Nick Reiner has since been arrested and charged with killing the pair.

Kiefer Sutherland Recalls Rob Reiner Shooting ‘A Few Good Men’ Scene

Sutherland made his comments while appearing in “CBS News: Rob Reiner — Scenes from a Life” to discuss what it was like working with Rob, appearing alongside the likes of Albert Brooks, Kathy Bates, and Michael Douglas. At one point, he opened up about how Rob was able to capture an iconic scene from the movie.

Adapted from Aaron Sorkin’s play of the same name, the film stars Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, and Kevin Bacon, and follows the court-martial of marines who are alleged to have caused the death of a fellow marine. Near the end of the film, Nicholson’s character makes his “You can’t handle the truth!” speech, something that the director was able to capture perfectly, according to Sutherland.

Sutherland explained, “No one said a word, and Rob went up to Jack Nicholson and whispered in his ear, ‘Do you want to do another one?’ And Jack Nicholson said, ‘Well, we’re here.’”

However, the filmmaker was so impressed that he didn’t feel the need to shoot any more takes and allowed everyone to go home.

“They had planned to shoot the whole day, and Rob looked at everybody and said, ‘I couldn’t ask for anything more, so you guys all have the rest of the day off,’ ” Sutherland said

Kathy Bates Says Rob Reiner ‘Changed the Course of Her Life’

During the same special, Bates was honest about the impact that Rob has had on her life, revealing that she owes her movie career to him.

“Rob changed the course of my life and if he hadn’t, I wouldn’t be sitting in front of you now,” she said.

She continued, “When I look back over the last 35 years since we made ‘Misery,’ I realize that if I hadn’t done ‘Misery’ it would be like being George Bailey and going back seeing what his life would have been like if he had never been there.”

“I’ve always wanted to be an actress from when I was very very small. I don’t know why, I’ve always had that dream. And if it wasn’t for Rob, I don’t think that I would ever have been able to make that dream come true in such a dramatic and incredible way.”
