Utah State men’s basketball cooled off the high-scoring and normally highly efficient Colorado State offense and defeated the Rams 100-58 on Saturday in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams in Logan, Utah.
The Rams shot only 37% from the field in the game and scored only 24 points in the first half, digging themselves a hole they couldn’t get out of.
CSU is now 9-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. USU is 10-1 and 1-0. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak by the Rams.
Utah State took control from the start, jumping out to a 12-0 lead while the Rams missed their first seven shots from the field. After CSU stopped the Aggies’ initial run on a layup by Jevin Muniz, Utah State went on a 15-3 run to take a 27-5 advantage.
The Rams trailed by as many as 28 points in the first half but were able to whittle the Aggies’ lead down to 21, 45-24 at halftime.
CSU shot only 26% from the field and 33% (4 of 12) from behind the arc in the first half. They were outrebounded by the Aggies 20-11 and turned the ball over eight times in the first 20 minutes.
Also in the first half, CSU leading scorer Kyle Jorgensen went down with an injury. Replays showed him holding his knee before being helped to the locker room. He returned to the bench later on crutches.
The second half wasn’t much better for the Rams. The closest they got in the final 20 minutes was 45-26 following a 3-pointer by Brandon Rechsteiner less than a minute in.
Utah State took its largest lead of the game at 100-55 with 30 seconds remaining.
Carey Booth led the Rams with 14 points. Rechsteiner added 11. CSU was outrebounded 40-20 in the contest and turned the ball over 15 times. The Rams made only seven of their 23 attempts from beyond the arc.
CSU will play its Mountain West home opener Dec. 30 against Nevada at 7 p.m. at Moby Arena.
