Michael Douglas

Michael Douglas spoke about how he related to the late director and actor Rob Reiner.

He appeared on the Sunday, December 21, special episode of “CBS News: Rob Reiner – Scenes from a Life.”

Douglas opened up by stating he would spend “a lot” of time talking with Reiner about their sons who both struggled with addiction.

The 81-year-old noted how he is happy that his son, Cameron Douglas, was able to overcome his issues and is now living a “prosperous life.”

He said that he would often talk with Reiner about “what you can do as a parent, and what you can’t do,” regarding helping their children who were both struggling at the time.

“With this terrible tragedy, we’re realizing how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son,” Douglas said during the special.

Reiner, who had a prolific career as an actor and filmmaker, and Michele Singer were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home in what authorities are investigating as an apparent homicide.

Their passing sent shockwaves through Hollywood, where both were widely regarded not only for their professional accomplishments but for their generosity and kindness.

The two shared three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy.

Hours after the two were found, Nick Reiner was arrested in connection with their murder and was being held without bail. In the days after the tragedy, it was revealed that Nick Reiner was diagonised with schizophrenia.

Douglas Shared a Tribute to Social Media

In addition to appearing on the special, Douglas took to social media to honor the Reiners.

“A most tragic situation for two extraordinary people who gave so much to make a better world,” he wrote. “Rob and Michele Reiner will be deeply missed.”

Douglas has known Reiner for decades, and their friendship extended beyond professional collaborations.

Rob & Michele Balanced Each Other Out

In a separate statement, Douglas reflected on the dynamic between Rob and Michele, noting that they balanced each other beautifully throughout their life together.

“She was willing to play the bad cop. Because Rob was sometimes bouncing, bouncing off the walls. He had a great imagination, a great energy. He’s very impulsive. And they complemented each other really well,” he said.

Reiner’s legacy spans a remarkable body of work that touched multiple generations of filmgoers. As a director, his films — including classics such as “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand by Me,” “When Harry Met Sally…” and “A Few Good Men” — remain beloved for their emotional resonance and cultural impact.

As an actor, he first gained recognition on television before transitioning into a leading voice behind the camera.
