It’s been a slow offseason thus far in the Bronx for the New York Yankees. Brian Cashman and company have yet to make any big-time signings, and some of their biggest free agents have already walked out the door (Devin Williams, Luke Weaver).
The Yankees are awaiting the free agency decisions of both Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt. Some of the notable signings the Yankees have made so far this winter include Ryan Yarborough, Amed Rosario, and, most recently, Paul Blackburn. All three players were formerly on the Yankees.
On Monday, the Yankees found themselves in the news for signing two MLB veterans to minor league deals.

Yankees Sign Zack Short and Ali Sánchez to Minor League Contracts
The Yankees have agreed to minor league contracts with both Ali Sánchez and infielder Zack Short, according to the team’s MLB.com transaction log.Â
Both players are MLB veterans. Short spent his 2025 season with the Houston Astros, and the Yankees are serving as his sixth MLB organization in just five years. Both big leaguers will assumingly be extended an invite to Spring Training in February, and try to prove themselves from there, but in all likelihood, both Ali Sánchez and Zack Short will start the 2026 campaign in the minors.

Ali Sánchez is a right-handed catcher who has appeared in parts of four MLB seasons. He has zero career home runs, 22 career hits,  and has spent two full seasons (2022, 2023) away from Major League Baseball.
Sánchez appeared in 12 games in 2025 with the Red Sox and Blue Jays, and had five hits in 23 at-bats. This deal is likely just to add organizational depth for New York. Zack Short has a career. 172 average over 506 at-bats.

New York’s Infield Outlook
The tough news for both Zack Short and Ali Sánchez is the fact that the Yankees are already set at both the catcher and infield positions, for the most part.
New York will roll with Austin Wells and J.C. Escarra behind the plate.
As for Zack Short, he’s behind Jazz Chisholm Jr., Amed Rosario, Ryan McMahon, Anthony Volpe, Oswaldo Cabrera, and pretty much any other top free agent infielder the Yankees bring in.
As Christmas looms in just three days, it will be interesting to see if the Yankees make any last-minute shopping trips in the free agent market to add to their roster before the new year.
They continue to be linked to the top free agent names, but have been unable to reach a deal with any of them. Luckily for New York, some of the biggest names in both the position player and pitcher markets are still available to sign.
