Vikings QB Max Brosmer Sends Strong Message on Replacing J.J. McCarthy After Injury

Max Brosmer’s first NFL start was a disaster, but the Minnesota Vikings quarterback appears to have learned from what he went through.

Brosmer spoke about performing and picking up his first NFL win in relief of J.J. McCarthy in Minnesota’s 16-13 win over the New York Giants on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Brosmer, of course, threw for just 126 yards and had four interceptions in the Vikings’ 26-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 30. But after McCarthy was ruled out with a hand injury in the first half Sunday, Brosmer went 7 for 9 for 52 yards and led his first NFL game-winning drive.

Brosmer may get his second NFL start Thursday if McCarthy is unable to go against the Detroit Lions at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Max Brosmer Learned From His Failed Start In Seattle

The Vikings threw Brosmer into the lineup against the underrated Seahawks defense. The result was Minnesota put up just 162 total yards, and Brosmer was sacked four times in its first shutout loss since 2007.

“Obviously that week was a tough week for the team,” Brosmer said Sunday. “To have that happen throughout your first start is good. You have to take what comes from that game and learn from it.

Brosmer lauded Minnesota’s defensive effort, since it held the Giants to three points, 141 total yards and 13 net passing yards. Between that, and the experience in Seattle, Brosmer admitted he felt more comfortable, with some help from the Vikings’ veteran-laden offense.

“We talked about the experience of starting an NFL game and applying that to the rest of your career, and this was just the next step,” Brosmer said. “The first couple of plays [right tackle Brian O’Neill] was like you don’t got to say [the play] so loud, they might be able to hear you. I’m so used to yelling in the huddle, and he’s like ‘you’re good’ and we calmed down a little bit.

“That goes back to leading together, not just one guy leading but leading together and that’s what our team is made up of, a bunch of leaders.”

Max Brosmer Made Plays When The Vikings Needed Him To

The Vikings defense barely broke a sweat, holding rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to just 33 passing yards and giving up just 12 first downs to the hapless New York offense.

But Brosmer entered with Minnesota ahead 13-10 — after McCarthy exited when he injured his hand on Brian Burns’ strip-sack that resulted in Tyler Nubin’s 27-yard touchdown that was the Giants’ only TD.

But Brosmer only led three second-half offensive possessions, yet he still managed to make plays on that game-winning drive that led to Will Reichard’s tie-breaking field goal with 4:18 to play. After taking a crucial sack to Abdul Carter on second-and-8, Brosmer hit Justin Jefferson for a 21-yard pass play on third-and-17, which kept the drive going.

“[Jefferson] ran a great route,” Brosmer said. “The O-line, they couldn’t have protected better, and making that throw is a lot easier when you have great protection up front, against a really good front too.”
