The Miami Dolphins lost 45-21 against the Cincinnati Bengals in a game where they allowed 35 straight points. Miami dropped to 6-8 as they moved closer to their second consecutive losing season.
One of Miami’s top performers on the day was running back De’Von Achane, who scored a touchdown and totaled 90 scrimmage yards. He also had a 44-yard reception wiped out due to an offensive pass interference penalty. Despite the productive day for Achane, his 90 yards marked his fewest since Week 8.
De’Von Achane’s Feat
Achane ran the ball 15 times for 81 yards, highlighted by a 48-yard rushing touchdown that tied the game in the first quarter. His 5.8 yards per carry on the season leads the NFL. Additionally, his touchdown marked his 12th on the year, which ties him for the most he’s had in a season.
Most importantly, during the game, Achane surpassed former Dolphins running back Delvin Smith and moved up to fourth on the Dolphins’ single-season rushing leaderboard. He’s currently at 1,267 rushing yards, which is five yards shy of Jay Ajayi’s 2016 season that featured three 200-yard rushing performances.
Atop the Dolphins leaderboard is running back Ricky Williams for his efforts in the 2002 and 2003 seasons. Williams’ spot at the very top is safe as Achane would need to average 293 rushing yards in the next two games in order to match Williams. The second spot on the leaderboard is achievable for Achane, as he would need to average 52.5 rushing yards over the next two games. Achane has surpassed 53 rushing yards in 13 out of 15 games this season.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of what Achane has done this year is his effectiveness. As mentioned before, his 5.8 yards per carry lead the league. His yards per attempt would also represent the highest of any of the Dolphins’ top 15 all-time rushing seasons. Achane has a chance of becoming the first Dolphin player ever to have over 1,000 rushing yards and at least 5.5 yards per attempt.
Upcoming games for Achane and the Dolphins
Unfortunately for Achane, the road gets tougher for the Miami Dolphins. Despite losing six out of their last seven games, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still possess a top-10 run defense as they’re allowing the seventh fewest rushing yards per game in the NFL. That mark has deteriorated slightly as they’re allowing 117 rushing yards in their last three games.
Miami’s season finale will come against New England. Achane struggled earlier this year against them, as he finished with 11 carries for only 30 yards. His 30 yards represented the second lowest number for him this season. Miami fans will have to monitor the health of Patriots linebacker Robert Spillane. He’s missed the last two games with an injury, and in both those games the Patriots have allowed the opposing running back to reach the 100-yard mark. Before Spillane went out of the lineup, the Patriots possessed the third-best run defense in the NFL.
