Popular Video Game Creator Passes Away & Fans Remember His Legacy

The video gaming community is mourning the loss of Vince Zampella. Zampella, who was 55, had an extensive resume, but he’s most remembered for creating the “Call of Duty” franchise. Now, fans of his work are flocking to social media to pay tribute to his legacy. 

According to NBC Los Angeles, Zampella passed away on December 21. His death happened near Los Angeles and was the result of a single car crash. Per the report, the tragic accident occurred in the San Gabriel Mountains at around 12:45 pm. There was also a passenger in the vehicle, and sadly, they passed away.


Vince Zampella Leaves Behind an Impressive Legacy

Zampella began his career in gaming in the late 1990s. Per IMDb, his first video game credit came in 2002 with “Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.” He was credited as the Director of Development. The game’s success led him to create the gaming company Infinity Ward with Jason West and Grant Collier.

The following year, “Call of Duty” from Infinity Ward came out, with him as the Chief Commercial Officer. The company released “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” in 2009. The next year, Zampella and West cofounded Respawn Entertainment and released titles such as “Titanfall” in 2014, “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” in 2019, and “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” in 2023. 


Fans and Colleagues Are Paying Tribute to His Legacy

Zampella had a hand in some of the most significant video games of all time. Because of that, many of his fans and colleagues are paying tribute to his legacy on social media.

Geoff Keighley said, “I cannot believe I am writing this. Vince Zampella, a titan of the video game industry, the co-creator of Call of Duty and co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, not to mention a dear friend, died in a car crash yesterday in Los Angeles.”

The Official Game Awards account on X said, “The Game Awards mourns the loss of Vince Zampella, co-creator of Call of Duty, and co-founder of Infinity Ward and Respawn Entertainment.”

Another fan of his work wrote, “Vince Zampella had one of the most legendary runs in video games. Anything he touched turned into gold. His loss will be felt deeply in this industry. RIP”

Someone else said, “I can’t believe I’m going to post this today, but anyway. RIP Vince Zampella.” Finally, JP Kellams wrote, “Vince Zampella was not just an amazing game creator. He was also a friend. In absolute shock right now. Rest in peace to an absolute legend and giant of our industry.”

Zampella will be missed, but his legacy and video games will live on forever.
