The Chicago Bears are riding high on their critical 22-16 win over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, December 20, and they should soak it up, because taking down a longtime NFC North rival is an accomplishment. It’s a big deal, and seeing Ben Johnson take that win over Matthew LaFleur was priceless for the Bears franchise.
Following an exciting showdown that even went into overtime, the Chicago Bears earned that special win over the Packers and plenty of bragging rights. Johnson was like a proud pappa after the matchup, stating, “[General manager] Ryan [Poles] has done a great job bringing this collection of people together. They’re mentally tough.”
He added, “They’re physically tough. I know we’re going to fight you for 60 minutes and even though the odds were against us there that late, we’re going to keep on swinging and make some plays when we needed to.”
But, there was what’s being called a “dirty” play in the game, when Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon knocked Chicago Bears wide receiver Moore to the ground in the first half, resulting in Moore having to briefly leave the game. Now, Nixon may be in line for punishment from the NFL for his move.
Green Bay Packers Player May Get Punished Following Chicago Bears Game
Nixon’s actions against Moore in the game may be categorized as unnecessary roughness, even though the referees didn’t throw a penalty flag during the game.
Each week during the season, the NFL hands down punishments to players for actions taken during the previous week’s games. The NFL states on their official website that these actions are “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity.” Before the season starts, the NFL and NFL Players Association agree on the set of game-related rules violations that result in these accountability measures.
The NFL often fines players who did something wrong in the game where the refs didn’t call a flag, as a way to make up for it. So, that may very well be the case with Nixon. The NFL will announced their final decision on Saturday, December 27.
Chicago Bears Are in the Playoffs
It was a whirlwind weekend for the Chicago Bears, because on top of beating the Packers, they official landed their playoff spot when the Detroit Lions fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“This is a special group,” Johnson said after the win. “I felt that early in the season. You get some of those wins, the Raiders game, the Washington game, and you start feeling it, the belief is coming. This group, I’m talking about coaches and players combined, it’s rare, it really is. I can’t say enough good things about the people in this building.”
Now, the Bears are officially the first team in the NFC North to make the postseason. The only other team in the NFC North heading towards being in the postseason is the Packers, since the Vikings were eliminated weeks ago, and the Lions now have less than a 10% chance of making it. It’s a different era to be a Chicago Bears follower, and it’s a great one.
