49ers’ George Kittle Gives Major Injury Update After Beating Colts

The San Francisco 49ers dominated the Indianapolis Colts, 48-27, on December 22 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Nonetheless, the win came at a cost as George Kittle left the game and didn’t return, though he was standing on the sideline in his helmet for much of the contest.

After the game, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said it’s too early to know the severity of Kittle’s ankle injury, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

Due to an ankle issue, Kittle was sidelined for part of the third quarter and all of the fourth. Since the game’s outcome remained uncertain until late, there’s at least a chance he could miss next Sunday’s matchup against Chicago. His condition will need further evaluation to determine the severity, though he is expected to try to play.

Nonetheless, Kittle spoke to the media after the game and cleared up any speculation about his injury.

“Pretty excited,” Kittle said about the result before giving an update on his injury (h/t KNBR). “We won Monday Night Football on the road. It’s already after 12. Can’t wait to get on a plane and go home. My concern level—I don’t think it’s a high ankle sprain. We’ll take it one day at a time and go from there.”

49ers’ George Kittle Adds More Injury Details

Moreover, the 49ers tight end provided a timeline for when the injury that kept him out for most of the second half occurred.

“It happened [in the] second quarter,” Kittle added. “We had a drive. I feel like I got hip dropped. Ankle got stuck in the grass or the cork turf. Really weird field. Anyway, I tried to tape it up. Went in the third quarter, and it just got worse from there. If I can’t run very fast or plant, then I think it’s a better [option] for my other tight ends to go in there and make plays.”

Losing Kittle was a major blow for the Niners, considering the game he was having. The veteran pass catcher had seven catches for 115 yards and has scored one touchdown.

49ers QB Brock Purdy Came Up Huge Against Colts

While Kittle was having a big game, so was Brock Purdy. He drove the offense, finishing 25 of 34 passes for 295 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. The 49ers standout was especially dangerous in the red zone, going 4 of 6 on attempts inside the 20-yard line.

After the contest, Trent Williams didn’t hesitate to sing the signal caller’s praises while speaking to Scott Van Pelt of ESPN.

“He’s resilient, and he carries a certain peace about him right now that keeps him from getting rattled,” Williams said postgame on ESPN. “He’s truly confident in his abilities and fully trusts the scheme, and it radiates from him, something the whole offense can feel; he’s our leader, and we follow him.”

San Francisco is set to host the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks, two teams already competing in the playoffs. Both opponents are still battling for their division titles. However, the Niners hold an advantage with home-field support at Levi’s Stadium for both matchups.
