Chiefs Eyed as a Top Team to Poach Projected $122 Million Star From Cowboys

The focus for both the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs has already turned to the offseason with NFL rumors swirling as both teams are eliminated from playoff contention. For the Cowboys, the front office will be tasked with not only acquiring new players but retaining some of their own key veterans.

One player who the Cowboys could face serious competition for is star playmaker George Pickens. The Cowboys deserve plenty of criticism for the holes on the current roster but acquiring Pickens in a bargain deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers proved prudent.

Now, Pickens is headed for a big payday in NFL free agency as the wideout is nearing the final weeks of a four-year, $6.7 million rookie contract. Given the Chiefs’ lack of explosive playmakers, Kansas City is an obvious threat to poach Pickens but their chances have complications.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest Cowboys and Chiefs rumors.

Cowboys Rumors: The Chiefs Labeled a Threat to Make Push for Star WR George Pickens

Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton outlined the top potential landing spots for Pickens, if the Cowboys do not use the franchise tag on the playmaker. It is a big if as the Cowboys hold a great deal of control on Pickens’ future thanks to the franchise tag. Yet, this gesture is often frowned upon by players and agents alike who are seeking new long-term deals.

“The Chiefs wanted to feature the deep ball this season, but it didn’t work out as planned,” Moton detailed in a December 22, 2025, story titled, “George Pickens’ Top NFL Free-Agency Landing Spots if Cowboys Don’t Tag Star WR.” “(Xavier) Worthy missed a few games with a dislocated shoulder, and Patrick Mahomes’ pass-catchers let him down with drops.

“Kansas City can bring in Pickens to open up its passing attack. He can also be an upgrade over Rice if the team has second thoughts about the 25-year-old entering a contract year,” Moton added.

“Pickens may need to exercise patience with catching passes from Mahomes, who’s recovering from a torn ACL, but the two-time league MVP is worth the wait in the long term.”

Cowboys Star George Pickens’ Projected Market Value Is a 4-Year, $122 Million Contract Ahead of NFL Free Agency

Pickens is projected to have a market value of a four-year, $122.8 million contract, per Spotrac. If the Cowboys opted to use the franchise tag, CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford estimated that the price tag for Pickens will be about $28 million for Dallas.

If the Cowboys are wise, the franchise will not allow Pickens to get close to signing with the Chiefs or another team. Even if Pickens were to bolt Dallas, Kansas City does not make the most sense given Patrick Mahomes could miss games next season as the star quarterback recovers from an ACL injury. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has been vocal about his desire for Dallas to re-sign Pickens.

“I think that’d be a priority in the offseason,” Prescott said of Pickens, per ESPN’s Todd Archer and Jeremy Fowler. “Right now has it come up? Maybe joking here or there, whether it be to George or whether it be to Jerry. … But I’m all-in for [keeping Pickens].”
