Actor James Ransone is being remembered for a heroic act that he did years prior to his tragic death.

In an Instagram tribute shared on Monday, December 22, a woman named Molly Watts described how Ransone stepped in to protect her during a frightening encounter, an act she says changed the course of her evening and potentially her life.

The woman detailed the incident, explaining that she thought she was in a dangerous situation when a man made unwanted advances that escalated quickly.

Watts Details the Scary Incident

She wrote that Ransone, who happened to be nearby, stepped in without hesitation when heard her distress.

According to her account, Ransone confronted the assailant, physically intervened and helped ensure she could get to safety, ultimately calling for help and staying until she was secure.

“PJ heard my screams and ran to help. He came running shirtless, carrying a bat or pipe — I’m not sure which, because I never saw him in action,” she wrote. “He scared my attacker, who ran. PJ chased him to the building he fled to.”

The scary incident occured outside his New York apartment in 2006.

Her message included deep gratitude toward Ransone, emphasizing that his courage prevented what might have been a traumatic ordeal.

“PJ saved me. I’m not sure if I would have the same life if he hadn’t run down that night,” Watts added.

Ransone Commented on the Heroic Act in the Past

Ransone previously commented on helping the woman while on the “Jim and Sam Show” in October 2016.

At the time, he was with his girlfriend and heard the noise and went downstairs. When he realized that he needed to intervene, he ran back upstairs and told his girlfriend.

“I was like, ‘Listen, lock yourself in here. Call the police. Like tell the cops to come right now,’” he recalled.

He said he grabbed a metal pipe and went to go find the attacker. Once he found him, he hit him with the pipe and the two fought. The attacker ended up running off, but was later caught by the police.

Responses ranged from admiration of his courage to broader appreciation for bystanders who step up in critical moments.

“What he did for you, not many would have done,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “PJ was a stand up guy.”

Supporters noted that stepping into a dangerous situation to protect someone requires both awareness and courage, qualities that don’t always make headlines but have profound impact on those directly affected.

On Friday, Dec. 19, Ransone died by suicide at the age of 46. He leaves behind his wife Jamie McPhee, and their two children.

Ransone’s career has been marked by intense, compelling performances across television and film.

He earned recognition for his portrayal of Ziggy Sobotka on “The Wire,” and more recently reached wider audiences with prominent roles in “Sinister” and the “It” franchise.
