Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves may have avoided a catastrophic injury during his team’s 119-96 loss to the Houston Rockets on Christmas Day.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Reaves — who did not play the second half with a sore left calf — left the Crypto.com arena without the assistance of a brace or boot, which could be a positive indicator of the severity of his injury. Furthermore, the Lakers’ second-leading scorer appeared in good spirits while leaving the premises.
“Austin Reaves left the arena without the assistance of any brace or boot of crutch for his left leg,” McMenamim reported via X.
“He told reporters “Merry Christmas” as he made his exit. JJ Redick said he didn’t have further information on Reaves’ left calf at this time.”
Austin Reaves Injury Update
Reaves will undergo an MRI on his left leg on Friday, per ESPN. The undrafted guard recently dealt with a mild left calf strain and came off the bench against the Phoenix Suns this past Tuesday in his first game back after a three-game absence. On Thursday, though, Reaves returned to the starting unit and scored 12 points (5-of-8 FG) in just 15 first-half minutes before being ruled out for the game.
Due to his recent left calf issues, the Lakers were reportedly extra-cautious when Reaves experienced tightness during the halftime break.
“Austin clearly felt something,” Lakers head coach JJ Redick told reporters. “We did our normal halftime and then as we were walking out of the locker room, [Lakers director of player performance and health] Dr. [LeRoy] Sims told me he was out.”
Luka Doncic on Austin Reaves Injury
Luka Doncic, who dealt with a recurring calf issue before being traded by the Dallas Mavericks, urged his backcourt partner not to rush back from the injury.
“I know how it is to go through a calf injury,” Doncic said after the game.
“It’s not fun at all. [I will] just be there to support him. Take your time. Calves are dangerous, so take your time.”
To Doncic’s point, calf injuries have notoriously led to Achilles tears in recent years, a trend highlighted by the devastating injuries suffered by Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton during last season’s playoffs. It’s precisely why the San Antonio Spurs have preached caution with their franchise star, Victor Wembanyama, who has come off the bench in a limited role for seven consecutive games since dealing with a calf strain.
If the Austin Reaves injury is severe, the Lakers — on a three-game losing streak — could continue to slip further in the Western Conference standings. Redick’s team has been forced to use 17 different starting lineups through 29 games thus far due to injuries. Thus far, Reaves has missed six games, while Doncic (seven), LeBron James (16), Gabe Vincent (15), Marcus Smart (nine), and Rui Hachimura (three) have all missed significant periods with injuries. Hachimura and Reaves actually returned from injuries on Christmas Day, but the latter will seemingly be sidelined once again.
