Oilers Linked with Future Hall of Famer to Fix Goaltender Woes

The Edmonton Oilers are once again being linked with yet another goalie. The team recently acquired Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins to try to solve their woes between the pipes. Jarry, however, recently suffered an injury and is set to be out of action for a few weeks. While he has won all three of his starts with his new team, the veteran has posted an .887 SV% and 3.08 GAA.

With Jarry out, the Oilers have gone with a combination of Calvin Pickard and Connor Ingram in net. So far, the latter netminder has shown to be the more reliable of the duo. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Edmonton is willing to stand pat with having the second-lowest team save rate in the entire NHL.

Outside of pursuing another trade, the Oilers are also being named as a top contender to sign Marc-Andre Fleury. The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer previously retired after the 2024-25 season. Despite this, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has reported that several teams have reached out to the goalie in an attempt to end his retirement.

ESPN’s Greg Wyshnyski followed up this report by claiming that Fleury is open to an NHL return. The writer even suggested that the Oilers are a “team to watch” if the legendary netminder returns to the ice. Fleury and Jarry were previously teammates in Pittsburgh.

Multiple NHL Insiders Believe Marc-Andre Fleury is Best Suited for the Edmonton Oilers

GettyMarc-Andre Fleury will likely not return to the Minnesota Wild.

If Fleury attempts another NHL comeback, he would almost certainly want to return with a Stanley Cup contender. A seemingly logical destination would be with the Minnesota Wild. The goalie spent the last three+ seasons with the team and has even practiced with their reserves recently. The Wild, however, has a very strong goalie tandem in Jesper Wallstedt and Filip Gustavsson.

Because of this, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli believes that the Oilers have the best chance to sign the star. “I think [Fleury’s] got the itch to keep playing, and I think for a guy who really has made a home in Minnesota, there’s no room for him there with Wallstedt and Gustavsson,” Seravalli explained with Sports 1440’s Kevin Karius. “If he’s going to come back, it’s going to be with a team that has an authentic chance to win. And that’s got the Oilers written all over it.”

The Athletic’s Chris Johnston also believes that the Oilers are frontrunners for Fleury. The insider specifically picked Edmonton as the netminder’s top landing spot. “The pitch to Fleury would be pretty straightforward: Come join a team with Stanley Cup ambitions and rejoin forces with No. 1 man Tristan Jarry, a fellow former Pittsburgh Penguin,” wrote Johnston.

Edmonton Oilers are not the Only Team to be Interested in Fleury

While potentially targeting a retired former star may seem desperate, Fleury has proven to be a reliable player into his 40s. In fact, the veteran posted a 2.93 GAA and .899 SV% in 26 total games with the Wild in 2024-25. Assuming he could maintain these numbers with the Oilers, Fleury could become the team’s starter down the stretch.

Edmonton will not be the veteran’s only option, though. Several other contenders, such as the Tampa Bay Lightning, have also been linked with Fleury as well. Nevertheless, the Oilers could give the star the best combination of Stanley Cup contender and potential time on the ice.
