Tomorrowâs matchup in Buffalo isnât just another Sunday game â itâs a Super Bowl preview. The Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off back-to-back NFC East titles, face the AFC powerhouse Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium on Sunday.
Even with both teams having clinched playoff spots, this game will be huge for their momentum and confidence heading into the postseason. This is more than a regular-season contest â itâs a chance for the Eagles to measure themselves against one of the NFLâs elite squads and send a message about their championship-caliber identity.
Eagles Look To Keep Offense On Track in Buffalo
After a disappointing three-game losing streak that culminated in a five-turnover performance by Jalen Hurts in Los Angeles, the Eagles’ offense has looked more comfortable and more prolific in their last two outings.
Philadelphia blanked the Raiders 31-0 two Sundays ago, in which Hurts put up an efficient stat line of 12-15 with three passing touchdowns and no interceptions. He connected with tight end Dallas Goedert twice, and Saquon Barkley followed up his 20 carry, 122 yard performance against the Chargers with 78 yards and a rushing score.
The next week against Washington, the Eagles became the first team in 21 years to repeat as NFC East Champions, taking down the hapless Commanders 29-18 at Northwest Stadium outside D.C. Hurts completed 22 of 30 passes with 185 yards and two touchdowns, Barkley rushed for 132 yards and a score, and A.J. Brown had five receptions for 95 yards in the victory.
For an Eagles offense that had been slumping and turning the ball over, they seem to be clicking once again in both the pass and the run. However, they will be put to the test in Buffalo, as the Bills boast the 11th-ranked total defense and second-ranked pass defense in the NFL.
Philadelphia could have rested its starters, but opted otherwise, with Nick Sirianni saying, âWe think playing our guys is the best thing for our football team. But you think through everything. I think anytime you step onto the football field, thereâs an opportunity to get better. ⦠Weâre trying to play our best football by the end of the season.â
The Time is Now For the Buffalo Bills
Even with the Bills sitting in second place in their division behind the upstart New England Patriots, this year presents a golden opportunity for Buffalo to overcome the postseason hump and return to the Super Bowl.
In what feels like a return of the 2010s, the Patriots, Broncos, Steelers, and Jaguars are all leading their divisions, with the Texans and Chargers occupying the other Wild Card spots. Among the division leaders, New England and Denver have often played down to competition and benefited from a soft schedule, while Pittsburgh and Jacksonville have looked questionable at times.
The Bills are the only team in the AFC with contending experience, a top-tier quarterback in Josh Allen, and a strong enough defense to complement an offense that is starting to find another gear. After Buffalo fell behind 21-0 at Gillette Stadium, they came back to defeat the Patriots 35-31 to keep their division hopes alive.
With the Bills’ kryptonite in the Chiefs already eliminated from the postseason and the Ravens being hamstrung without Lamar Jackson for large stretches, Buffalo has the chance to assert its dominance among a bunch of newcomers that do not have prior playoff experience.
This matchup between the Eagles and Bills will be a tone-setter for both sides, as each team may want to rest its starters against lesser competition to conclude the regular season. This week, however, is a battle to showcase improvement, prepare for playoff-level competition, and maybe even an early Super Bowl preview.
