Seeking veteran-help for their banged-up secondary, the Steelers have signed cornerback Tre Flowers.
The 30-year-old Flowers has played eight seasons in the NFL, most recently with the Lions earlier this year. He was released on Dec. 1 after appearing in two games.
He has played 97 games, starting 44 of them. In addition to Detroit, Flowers has also had stints with the Seahawks (2018-21), Bengals (2021-22), Falcons (2023), Jaguars (2024) and Colts (2024).
A fifth-round pick in 2018 out of Oklahoma State, Flowers has 287 tackles, four interceptions, five fumble recoveries, and two sacks.
Steelers Dealing With Multiple Injuries in Secondary
The Steelers are dealing with multiple injuries to their secondary ahead of Sundayâs game (1 p.m. ET) against the Browns. Cornerbacks Brandin Echols (groin) and James Pierre (calf) have already been ruled out, leaving Asante Samuel Jr. and Joey Porter Jr. as the expected starters. Flowers, who last played in Detroitâs Week 7 win over the Buccaneers, figures to see immediate playing time as the Steelers (9-6) look to lock up the AFC North title.
The Steelersâ defense ranks 30th against the pass (249.3 yards allowed/game) and 28th in yards allowed. Despite that, theyâve won three straight games to grab a commanding lead over the Ravens atop the division.
Flowers: Steelers Call Came as a Surprise
Flowers told Steelers reporters that he was home in Texas wrapping gifts for his two daughters on Christmas Eve when he got a call about being signed.
âI (told my family), âPack your bags.â I got to spend Christmas with my kids,â Flowers said. âIâve got my wife and kids up here. Itâs a blessing.â
Flowers played most extensively with the Seahawks, appearing in 47 games (40 starts) over parts of his first four seasons before being waived in 2021. He had a career-high three interceptions and two sacks in 2021, with his only other interception coming in 2022 as a Bengal.
