1 person killed, at least 16 injured in crash on 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights

A person was killed and at least 16 people were injured Sunday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on the 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights, where a big rig crashed into multiple vehicles, authorities said.

The crash on the southbound freeway, just south of 4th Street, occurred about 5:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

At least one vehicle caught fire and a “physical rescue” was requested, said Jennifer Middleton of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The CHP shut down all southbound lanes at 5:22 a.m. for at least two to three hours and confirmed that nine vehicles sustained major front-end damage. It was unclear if the big rig was loaded.

Paramedics transported some of the injured — with moderate injuries — to Adventist Health White Memorial hospital, the CHP said.

No other information was immediately available.
