New York Yankees fans across the country would certainly like to forget about some parts of the 2025 season. After not reaching the ALCS, the Yankees also didn’t receive enough contributions from shortstop Anthony Volpe, which drew outrage from Yankees faithful and those who covered the team.
However, Anthony Volpe did undergo surgery after the 2025 season, as it appears he had been playing through a shoulder issue for the majority of the season. Should that give Volpe an excuse for a poor offensive season? That’s for time to tell, but a recent prediction has Volpe being the Yankees’ top bounceback candidate for New York next season.

Yankees’ Anthony Volpe Might Be On Last Chance
This upcoming season might ultimately be judgment day for Anthony Volpe. New York has re-signed Amed Rosario, who is expected to get some time on the infield, and also still has Jose Caballero, who saw time at shortstop when Volpe was sidelined.
2025 was just Volpe’s third MLB season, but Volpe also hasn’t posted an OPS+ in any of those seasons near league-average (100).
However, a recent MLB.com article lists Anthony Volpe as the top ‘bounceback’ candidate for the New York Yankees:

GettyYankees could look to trade Anthony Volpe.
“Volpe played through a left labrum tear that required offseason surgery, limiting him both offensively and defensively after a solid start to the season. Even so, Volpe has been a constant presence, logging at least 153 games in each of his three Major League seasons while providing value on the bases and in the field.”
In 2025, Volpe hit just .212 with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs over 153 games. He has 52 career home runs in three seasons. Volpe’s power upside hasn’t been the issue in his game; it’s the high strikeout rate. Anthony Volpe has struck out 150+ times in all three of his MLB seasons, and he’s received a truckload of at-bats.

Volpe’s 2026 Projections
The big question surrounding Volpe in 2026 is whether he will be healthy and whether he will be able to live up to what his projections are.
According to BaseballReference.com, Volpe is projected to hit .233 in 2026 with 16 home runs, 26 doubles, and an OPS of .687.
That .687 OPS mark would still not be league average, but the .233 average would be a slight improvement from his .222 career mark.
A lot of Yankees fans are getting a little bit fed up with Volpe at the shortstop position, as his defense has also been a big issue. He seems to get sped up often when balls come his way, and it leads to rushed throws or slight bobbles that allow for runners to either advance or be safe on.
Volpe is still in his arbitration years, so it makes sense for them to hold onto him for now, but if he doesn’t ‘bounce back’ as predicted by MLB.com, the 24-year-old might find himself on a new MLB team.
