Eagles Star Facing NFL Punishment After Controversial Bills Play

Buffalo Bills tackle Spencer Brown was briefly knocked out of Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles after getting poked in the eye, a play that could lead to some punishment from the NFL.

Brown was injured late in the game after being poked in the eye by star Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter. A replay showed that Carter also appeared to grab Brown across the throat during the play, though no penalties were called.

Brown was seen jawing with some Eagles players after the Bills lost 13-12, later telling reporters that he believes Carter intentionally hit him in the eye. That could put the Eagles star in danger of facing further punishment from the NFL.

Jalen Carter Risks Fine After Hit

Speaking to reporters after the game, Brown was asked if he thought Carter’s poke through his facemask was accidental.

“No, I don’t think so, but it was coming I guess,” Brown replied, via WGRZ reporter Jonathan Acosta.

Brown was briefly injured on the hit, with trainers examining him on the field before he went to the sidelines for further evaluation. He was replaced by reserve lineman Ryan Van Demark for a few plays but returned for the conclusion of the game.

If the NFL deems that Carter intentionally poked Brown, he will face punishment when fines are announced next week. The league reviews all plays and announces fines on Saturday, regularly penalizing players even if officials on the field missed the call.

Bills Lose Division After Last-Second Loss to Eagles

The Bills ended up scoring a touchdown after Brown’s injury, cutting the lead to 13-6 after fill-in kicker Michael Badgley missed an extra point. The miss was costly, as the Bills still trailed by a touchdown when their defense held the Eagles on the next drive and got the ball back with less than four minutes in the game.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen led them on another drive that ended with a touchdown on his quarterback sneak on fourth down, but the Bills opted to go for a two-point conversion and lost when Allen overthrew receiver Brandin Cooks.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Bills head coach Sean McDermott said he wanted to seize the chance to win the game.

“Wanted to be aggressive, going for the win,” McDermott said. “It felt like we had a great call, great opportunity to go win it. Wanted to be aggressive so I’m not gonna sit back.”

With the loss, the Bills will have little to play for in their season finale against the New York Jets. They are locked into a wild-card berth, but their seeding will depend on the outcome of several other games.

With quarterback Josh Allen nursing an injured foot that had him limping in the second half and led to X-rays after the game, the Bills could choose to rest him and other starters in preparation for the wild-card round the following weekend. That could present a depth challenge after the Kansas City Chiefs poached third-string quarterback Shane Buechele from Buffalo’s practice squad.
