Inside George & Amal Clooney's $8.3 Million Château in Brignoles

George and Amal Clooney continue to balance global influence with private family life, building a home base that reflects both their stature and their desire for calm away from the spotlight.

The Academy Award-winning actor and the internationally respected human rights barrister share a carefully curated collection of homes across Europe and the United States, as per The Daily Mail.

As per House Beautiful, their residences include a Manhattan apartment, a countryside estate in England, and their beloved villa on Lake Como, where George has long been welcomed as a familiar face by locals.

In 2021, the couple expanded their footprint with a deeply personal addition. They purchased a château in southern France, choosing the quiet charm of Provence over flashier destinations. See the photos here.

The historic estate has since become a cherished retreat for the Clooneys, offering space, privacy, and a slower pace of life that aligns with how they choose to live beyond red carpets and courtrooms.

According to a report in Pure France, the Clooneys’ dreamy, royal French hideaway is in Brignoles, a peaceful town just outside Provence. The couple acquired the 18th-century estate, known as Domaine Le Canadel, in 2021 for $8.3 million, as per Hello.

Set across approximately 425 acres, the property includes a working vineyard along with a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a separate guest house. Together, the features create a secluded, self-contained retreat designed for privacy and extended stays.

While the price tag reflects the estate’s grandeur, maintaining a property of this scale brings ongoing responsibilities that extend well beyond the initial purchase.

The Hidden Costs of Maintaining an 18th-Century Estate

HELLO! Spoke with Charlotte Whincup of Bloom Building Consultancy about the potential costs tied to maintaining a historic property like the Clooneys’ French château.

“Property prices in France tend to be lower than in the UK,” Whincup said.

“Especially in rural areas where large homes in need of some TLC can be bought for a fraction of what you’d pay for something comparable on this side of the Channel.”

She noted, however, that the real financial commitment often comes after the sale. “The costs of modernising the 18th-century mansion will have been significant,” Whincup explained.

The report claims that climate also plays a major role in ongoing expenses.

“The focus of the works may have been the opposite to [any] required [at other properties]. In the south of France, the challenge is often to keep out the heat rather than keeping it in.”

While traditional shutters help reduce direct sunlight, Whincup said modern cooling is still essential. “Homes from this period typically have thick shutters to keep out direct sunlight, but the only way to maintain a comfortable internal temperature at the height of summer will be to run the air conditioning a lot.”

Those systems can quickly add up. “Aircon technology is gradually getting better, but it is still notoriously power-hungry,” she said.

“Ditto the open-air swimming pool, which will need heating in cooler months and needs an electric pump to run constantly.”

Living Like Locals in the South of France

Despite the costs that come with maintaining such a grand estate, George and Amal appear to have fully embraced the slower rhythm of life in the French countryside.

When the couple spends time at the château with their seven-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, they are said to live quietly and largely blend into the local community. For a time, their presence in Brignoles mainly went unnoticed.

Local bakery owner Ganaelle Joly told the Daily Mail in 2023, “Madame Clooney is tall and fabulous and very, very, beautiful. No matter who you are, you are going to look at her.”

Joly also described the couple as warm and approachable, sharing that they are happy to pose for photos on occasion. She recalled a visit when the Clooneys stopped by her bakery with their dog to pick up sandwiches and salmon.

“If George puts on a hat and sunglasses, he can easily go unnoticed,” she said, as per Hello.

For George and Amal, Domaine Le Canadel appears to be far more than another luxury purchase. It has become a private retreat where they have quietly settled into French life on their own terms.
