Woman who was in a polygamist marriage reveals she’s blood related to her ex-husband

Sister Wives star Christine Brown has admitted exactly how she is related by blood to her former husband, Kody.

The TLC reality star was ‘spiritually’ married to Kody from 1994 to 2021as his third wife, with the couple sharing six children – Aspyn Kristine, Mykelti Ann, Gwendlyn Genielle, Ysabel Paige, Truely Grace and son Paedon Rex.

The Utah-based star rose to fame on Sister Wives, which documented Kody’s polygamist lifestyle featuring his four wives and 18 children.

Christine left Kody in 2021 and married her current husband, David Woolley, in 2023.

In a new episode of Sister Wives, which aired on Sunday, December 28, she revealed to him and viewers that she was, in fact, related to Kody this whole time.

She explained: ‘I’m related to Kody. I knew growing up that I would have to marry a convert because I was literally related to everybody in the church.’

Explaining that she ‘did marry a convert’, ultimately she was ‘still related to him too.’

‘That’s not cool,’ David replied, although his wife noted: ‘Third cousins once removed is fully legal. Fully.’

Elsewhere in the episode, former sister wife Janelle Brown said everyone used to ‘joke about [how] they were cousins, but they are so distantly related it’s ridiculous.’

She continued: ‘I think in polygamist families, this kind of stuff happens all the time. It wasn’t the kind of relationship [between Christine and Kody] where you saw each other at the family reunion – it was a very distant relationship. 

‘But they would always joke about being cousins. It just is a small community.’

Kody and Christine announced their split in November 2021, after more than 25 years of marriage.

‘We will continue to be a strong presence in each other’s lives as we parent our beautiful children and support our wonderful family,’ Christine said in her announcement.

Kody separately added: ‘Christine’s decision to leave comes with a great deal of sadness. We enjoyed many years together and I have a large amount of respect and admiration for her.

‘Although we are moving forward on different paths, we will always remain committed parents.’

After revealing she was married to husband David in 2023 (whom she met on a dating app), she said: ‘I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I absolutely love monogamy – I was made for it.’
