The Dallas Cowboys made a very surprising move on Tuesday when they released former All-Pro cornerback, Trevon Diggs.
Although the action itself was hardly shocking – it was considered it almost a given that Dallas would move off Diggs prior to the start of the 2026 season in March, many were taken aback by the timing of it – coming just a few days prior to the finale of the 2026 regular season.
Now, according to a report by Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, there seems to be a clear explanation for why December 30th was chosen for Diggs’ release.
“My understanding of the Trevon Diggs situation is this: after the Cowboys finished their Christmas game vs. the Commanders, Diggs requested with HC Brian Schottenheimer to stay in Washington for the holiday since heâs from the area and his family stays there.” Schultz wrote in a post on X.
“Players often ask for â and are usually granted â additional family time during the holidays if the schedule makes sense (Dallas played Thursday). Schotty denied the request. Diggs again said he wanted to be with his family and that if he went back to Dallas, heâd just be flying right back on the first flight out, especially with players having several days off. The team vehemently denied his request again. And then today, the team released him. Diggs is healthy and ready to join a new team for the playoffs.”
It would seem thus to be much of the tension that arose; which would appear to have been the trigger leading to Diggs’ release; came from a needless dispute concerning flight scheduling during the holidays.
From Schultz’s report, it looks like the Cowboys were – for an unclear reason – dead set on having Diggs return with the rest of the team to Washington, which clearly annoyed the two-time Pro Bowler to the extent that Dallas decided to part with him earlier than they otherwise would have.
Trevon Diggs’ Play Has Suffered After Signing Hefty Extension
Diggs had become one of the best corners in the NFL after being drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, making the All-Pro team in 2021 and Pro Bowls in 2021 and 2022.
However, since signing a 5 year, $97 million extension in the 2023 offseason, Diggs has played in just 21 out of 52 possible regular season games, and has not been the same level of player he was at his peak, even when on the field.
After managing an incredible 11 interceptions back in the 2021 season, Diggs has managed just 3 picks in total in the three years since 2023.
And his overall play has not been that of which was becoming for a player being paid the amount he was, with him receiving a 56.1 grade from Pro Football Focus for his work in 2025, which puts him 79th out of 113 qualifying corners.
