Children have a blast with “science of gingerbread” at Discovery Cube in Sylmar
Children had a blast working on their gingerbread projects on Tuesday at Discovery Cube Los Angeles in Sylmar. Discovery Cube Los Angeles is a nonprofit interactive museum that focuses on hands-on science, hoping to inspire kids and families to embrace STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Math. The Cube hosts the “Science of Gingerbread” — Southern California’s largest gingerbread competition — which ends on January 4.

Gingerbread competitions are popular across the U.S. — festive contests where participants from children to professionals build elaborate and edible structures, judged on creativity, appearance and precision. For those who take it seriously, the National Gingerbread House Competition is an annual event held in North Carolina, a competition that has been broadcast by Good Morning America on ABC and The TODAY Show on NBC and that offers $40,000 in prizes.
Gingerbread entries must fit into a 2-foot cube and must include at least 75 percent gingerbread and be built from edible materials.
