The Toronto Blue Jays could have an intriguing infielder be a breakout candidate in 2026.
Toronto has some uncertainty in its infield with Bo Bichette a free agent and several teams interested in him. If the Blue Jays don’t sign Bichette, some players will have to step up. And a young prospect could be a name to watch.
MLB analyst Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report named Cutter Coffey as the most likely breakout candidate in the Blue Jays organization.
“The Blue Jays acquired Coffey and two other prospects from the Red Sox in exchange for catcher Danny Jansen at the 2024 deadline. His stock is trending up after a strong season at High-A and a solid run in the Arizona Fall League,” Reuter wrote.
“He has spent parts of the last three seasons at the High-A level. But after hitting .328/.427/.406 over 18 games in the AFL, he looks ready to make the jump to Double-A.”
Coffey is 21-years0old and was selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox. Yet, Toronto was able to acquire him in 2024 for Danny Jansen. Since then, he’s continued to play well to rise up prospect ranks.
Coffey spent the entire 2025 season in High-A with the Vancouver Canadians. In 2026, Coffey could look to reach AA or even AAA. If he does that, he could be an infield option for the Blue Jays very soon. The 21-year-old can play second and third base, which gives Toronto some options.
Coffey Can Provide Blue Jays With Some ‘Thump’
Although Coffey has only played in High-A, the infielder has shown some promise.
MLB Pipeline ranks Coffey as the Blue Jays’ 27th-ranked prospect. And, the outlet projects Coffey to be a utility infielder in the majors who can provide some power off the bench.
“Batting from the right side, Coffey stands tall and holds his hands high in his stance before starting his load with a leg kick,” MLB Pipeline wrote. “He generates good bat speed, leading to solid exit velocities, and he should have enough pop in his bat to regularly push for 12-15 homers each season. That said, he has been especially vulnerable to breaking stuff low and away from his upright stance, and that could be a problem as he faces tougher sliders in the upper levels.
“Coffey is a solid runner for his size, and using that throwing ability from his days on the mound, he possesses one of the best arms in the Blue Jays’ system. Because of the presence of Arjun Nimmala, his days as a shortstop are mostly past him with his time being split between second and third. He’s a better fit at the hot corner with that arm, but if he can get the most of his tools, he could have a future as a utility infielder who provides some thump off the bench.”
Coffey hit .273 with 11 home runs and 62 RBIs last season with Vancouver.
Blue Jays Predicted to Re-Sign Bichette
Toronto has been aggressive this offseason on the pitching market, but the team has yet to sign a bat.
The Blue Jays have been interested in the likes of Bichette, Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman. Yet, MLB insider Jon Heyman believes Toronto will end up with Bichette.
“I’m going to say he sticks with Toronto,” Heyman said. “There hasn’t been a lot of reporting on that. Certainly, the Red Sox are a possibility if he does not end up with Toronto. To me, it’s a marriage that works, so I think Toronto.”
Bichette has spent his entire career with the Blue Jays. He’s led the AL in hits twice.
