LSU, Lane Kiffin Get Huge Transfer Portal Update Amid QB Search

The NCAA transfer portal will open on January 2, and the LSU Tigers are looking to begin the Lane Kiffin era on the right foot by finding their starting quarterback for the 2026 season.

Many players will be seeking new programs for the 2026 season, and Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby is expected to draw interest.

Sorsby is one of the most appealing quarterback options available to any program looking to upgrade at the position. On3’s transfer portal rankings list him as the No. 7 overall prospect and the No. 3 quarterback, behind only North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker and Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Sam Leavitt.

As a result, it makes sense that LSU and Kiffin want the player to play in Baton Rouge next season. Nonetheless, the Tigers aren’t alone in their interest in Sorsby; other programs are expected to get involved. ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel shed some light on this transfer portal news story on January 1.

“As for the market itself, Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby is considered the top quarterback in the portal,” Thamel said. “I’ve been told by sources LSU, Texas Tech and Miami are among the schools considering Sorsby.”

Brendan Sorsby Production Sparks LSU Tigers Interest

All three teams mentioned saw what Sorsby did in 2025 for the Bearscats and see the potential that the 21-year-old has. This past season, Sorsby went 207-of-336 passing (61.6 percent) for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns, against just five interceptions.

Moreover, Sorsby didn’t just impact Cincinnati’s offense with his arm; he hurt the opposing defense with his legs. He rushed for 580 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging a career-high 5.8 yards per carry.

Sorsby played two seasons at Cincinnati after opening his college career with two years at Indiana. Across those four years, he piled up 7,208 passing yards with 60 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, while also adding 1,305 rushing yards and 22 more scores on the ground.

LSU Get Bad Brendan Sorsby Prediction From Expert

As for where Sorsby could land, A to Z Sports’ national college football writer, Ryan Roberts, believes that it will be one of the three teams in Thamel’s reporting; however, it won’t be LSU that lands that highly coveted quarterback once the transfer portal opens.

“There is a long list of programs that have interest in Brendan Sorsby, and entering the 2026 NFL Draft is still technically on the table,” Roberts wrote in his December 29 article. “Texas Tech, Indiana, and Tennessee are the three biggest suitors to know. The Red Raiders have the momentum and the NIL backing to get this one done.

It will be interesting to see if Kiffin and Co. can pull all the stops to land Sorsby and sell him on his vision for the program next season. Nonetheless, the Miami Hurricanes are off to the college football playoff semifinal after beating the Ohio State Buckeyes on December 31 in the Cotton Bowl.

As a result, this run could sway Sorsby to join the Hurricanes’ program and build on this success, especially if Miami can cap it off by winning the national title this month.
