Phillies Urged to Trade All-Star Infielder to Surprising AL Team

The Philadelphia Phillies have had a quiet offseason, but the team could look at the trade market to subtract from its roster.

Philadelphia could look to trade from its infield to help fill needs at other positions, and one name that has come up in trade talks is Alec Bohm. Bohm has served as the third baseman for the Phillies, but he could be dealt this offseason, as his name has come up in trade rumors.

MLB analyst Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report believes the Phillies could move Bohm to the Seattle Mariners.

“With all that acknowledged, the Phillies were very willing to listen on Bohm last offseason, and as players like Bichette, Bregman and Eugenio Suárez come off the board in free agency, the former All-Star could become a fallback candidate on the trade market,” Kelly wrote. “The Mariners were a team linked to Bohm last offseason. They’ve already lost Jorge Polanco in free agency. Suarez might opt for greener hitting pastures as well.

“Cole Young could take over at second base, but Bohm—who drove in 97 runs in both 2023 and 2024—would be an upgrade over Ben Williamson at the hot corner. Bohm is probably more likely to stay with the Phillies than not, but considering how good of a fit he looks like for the Mariners and Los Angeles Angels, he’s definitely not certain to be wearing red pinstripes in 2026.”

If Seattle doesn’t sign Suarez, it makes a lot of sense for the Mariners to try and acquire Bohm. The Phillies, meanwhile, seem open to the idea of moving the star infielder.

Bohm is in the final year of club control with the Phillies.

Phillies May Keep Bohm

Despite many Phillies fans wanting Bohm traded, the team may look to keep him.

Earlier this offseason, Phillies insider Matt Gelb reported that Bohm being traded is considered a backup plan and not a focus.

“So, barring Realmuto finding a different home, Dombrowski acted like someone content with the situation,” Gelb wrote. “The Phillies could pivot and devote payroll dollars earmarked for Realmuto to a pitcher. Maybe they’d pursue a third baseman, then flip Alec Bohm for further payroll relief to make it all fit. But those are all backup scenarios. For now.”

If the Phillies don’t trade Bohm, the team will keep him at third base, as he’ll be an impact hitter for the team.

Bohm hit .287 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs last season. He was an All-Star in 2024.

Philadelphia Could be Quiet This Offseason

The Phillies made it to the NLDS, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

With Philadelphia losing in the NLDS, many fans expected the Phillies to be aggressive this offseason to add more talent. Yet, President Dave Dombrowski hinted at a quiet offseason for the Phillies.

“I think you’re always trying to get better, but I don’t have a real big need,” Dombrowski said. “I guess we’d look for arms in the bullpen, but we’ve also got five solid guys out there that are of veteran status. And sometimes you have to give some young guys an opportunity, too. We have some guys that we like. So, that’s really where it stands. … As far as our everyday positional players, other than catcher, we’re pretty well set.”

The Phillies have the third-best odds to win the World Series.
