Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Issues Warning About Possible Big Trade

The Golden State Warriors are trying to make one last run at an NBA title. As long as they have Stephen Curry healthy, they are going to try to earn as many victories as possible. He is the face of the franchise and still one of the best players in the league.

Right now, the Warriors sit eighth in the Western Conference standings. Even with Curry and Jimmy Butler on the team, the offense isn’t good enough. Golden State owns just the 19th-best offense in the NBA. This is why they have been linked to making a big trade.

Making a big trade to help the offense has some big risks involved. Head coach Steve Kerr is aware of the risks, and he issued a warning to the organization about the perils of doing just that.

Warriors’ Steve Kerr Issues Warning About Making a Big Trade

While talking on the Tom Tolbert Show, Kerr talked about the dangers of possibly making a big trade at this stage of Curry’s career.

“If there’s something that makes us better, for sure. But all you have to do is look at some of these teams out there that have given up the world for a star player, and now they’re looking around like the Clippers, no picks. Phoenix, no picks. Milwaukee, no picks. You can really paint yourself into a corner if you’re risky and irresponsible.”

Kerr did go on to say that he trusts Mike Dunleavy Jr., who is the GM of the Warriors.

“I feel great about having Mike in charge of all this because he’s sharp and he understands.”

Kerr understands where his team stands in terms of the timeline of careers. Curry, Butler, and Draymond Green are definitely on the back nine of their careers. Trading a bunch of future first-round picks might not be in their best interest as the rest of the season drags on.

The Warriors Have Very Few Non-Draft Trade Assets

Part of the reason why this matters is that the Warriors have very few trade assets that aren’t draft picks. Jonathan Kuminga is almost certainly getting traded, but he can’t be the centerpiece of a trade for one of the bigger fish that could be available.

Golden State has the third-best defense in the league. Any trade they make needs to keep that in mind. Their defense is the only reason why the Warriors have any shot of possibly turning into a title contender with a big move for an offensive-minded player.

Kerr sounds like he might not want to make a massive trade that mortgages the future with this group. Perhaps he understands that the guys he has aren’t good enough to win the championship, even if they add another scorer in a trade.

If the Warriors make a move, they likely will wait until the trade deadline to survey what the price might be for some of these offensive players.
