Actor Jeremy Renner commemorated the third anniversary of the harrowing snowplow accident that nearly cost him his life by sharing a striking image of the very vehicle involved in the incident â and a message that underscored his resilience and gratitude.
The âAvengersâ and âMayor of Kingstownâ star used the moment to reflect on survival, recovery and embracing life with gratitude.
On Jan. 1, Renner, 54, posted a photo of the massive 14,300-pound snowcat plow that struck him in Reno, Nevada, on New Yearâs Day 2023.
The Instagram Stories image was captioned simply but defiantly with âNot todayâ, accompanied by a wink and kiss emoji â a playful yet powerful statement about overcoming that life-altering event.
The accident occurred while Renner was helping his then-27-year-old nephew Alex during heavy snow conditions.
As the snowplow began to roll, Renner risked his own safety to protect him, a decision that left Renner critically injured and unable to walk for a period.
He suffered more than 35 broken bones and blunt trauma, a recovery that involved extensive medical care and rehabilitation.
Renner Remains Positive
In his post marking the anniversary, Renner also shared another photo from his Instagram Stories, this time of a snowy path with a child framed by trees, alongside words celebrating âA New dayâ and expressing hope and love, adventure and new pathways in 2026.
His holiday message conveyed a spirit of optimism â signaling not just survival, but forward motion.
Rennerâs journey since the accident has been one of public candor and determination.
He previously discussed returning to the snowplow after the ordeal during an appearance on âThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,â explaining that confronting the machine head-on felt empowering.
âI go right into the eye of the storm of any fear or anything,” Renner said. “I didn’t want this thing to haunt me or own me by any means.”
Refusing to let fear dominate his life, he described his return as symbolic of taking control over his trauma rather than letting it define him.
Renner Spoke About the Accident in His Memoir
His 2025 memoir, âMy Next Breath,â also reflects on the accident and its aftermath, offering insight into how the near-death experience reshaped his perspective.
Renner wrote in the book that he believed that he briefly died on that day, according to Us Weekly.
âAs I lay on the ice, my heart rate slowed, and right there, on that New Yearâs Day, unknown to my daughter, my sisters, my friends, my father, my mother, I just got tired,â Renner wrote. âI died, right there on the driveway to my house.â
Fans and fellow actors have followed his recovery with admiration over the past three years.
Rennerâs willingness to share his story â from hospitalization to rehabilitation, and now reflection â has resonated with many who see his progress as a testament to resilience and grace under pressure.
His posts and interviews highlight not only the physical challenges of his recovery but also the emotional and psychological strength it took to move forward.
