Red Sox Offer Alex Bregman $32 Million Per Year Over 5 Seasons, Insider Reports

The Boston Red Sox moved one giant step closer to a reunion with the third baseman who helped lead them to their first playoff appearance since 2021 last season, according to a Spanish-language, Boston-based journalist. Bregman, a three-time All-Star, spent one season in Boston. Despite missing about 50 games with a leg injury, he became a fan favorite and highly respected clubhouse leader.

The Red Sox signed the 31-year-old to a three-year contract for $120 million just as spring training got underway last year. But the deal allowed Bregman to exercise an option to end the contract after just one season. Shortly after the 2025 season ended, the Houston Astros 2015 first-round draft pick took that option and became a free agent for the second year in a row.

Had he stayed, Bregman would have been in line for a $40 million payday in 2026 — and another in 2027. But according to insider Marino Pepén, he will need to take a significant pay cut to return to the Red Sox.

Pepén’s report has not been independently confirmed.

$32 Million Per Year For Bregman: Report

“The Red Sox are offering Alex Bregman $160 million for five years, with a willingness to continue negotiating intelligently (options and incentives),” Pepén wrote on his social media account Friday afternoon. “Currently, it’s the most competitive offer.”

That $160 million figure translates to an average annual value of $32 million per year, well below the $40 million the Red Sox were set to pay him for the next two years.

“The Boston Red Sox haven’t done much on the Alex Bregman front, other than keeping in touch with his camp about a possible return. However, it seems now some real progress may be being made,” wrote Sporting News correspondent TJ Morin in response to the unconfirmed report. “The Sox have reportedly put an offer on the table for Bregman. And, it seems like they are ready to spend on their leader.”

Bregman ended the 2025 season with a solid .821 OPS, 18 home runs and a 3.5 bWAR total.

Report Lines Up With Other Info

Though Pepén’s report contains more specific details than other reports about possible offers made to Bregman, the general point lines up with other reports over the past few days.

Speaking on the Canadian TSN Radio network Friday morning, longtime ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney declared, “I believe Alex Bregman ends up with the Red Sox. They’ve been aggressive and valued him going back to last summer.”

Olney did not specify how “aggressive” the Red Sox have been, but most reports purporting to reflect Boston front office thinking have said that re-acquiring Bregman is a “top priority” for this offseason.

On the other hand, MLB.com inside reporter Mark Feinsand wrote on Thursday that “sources believe the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks may be the two most aggressive clubs in the hunt for Bregman, though a Red Sox reunion remains a possibility.”

Red Sox Need to Move Quickly on Bregman

Other reports have said that the Red Sox are also looking at former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, also a free agent, as a backup plan in case they miss out on Bregman.
