Jerry Jones Speaks Out On Trevon Diggs After Departure

The Dallas Cowboys made the unexpected move of releasing All-Pro cornerback, Trevon Diggs, just days before their final game of the season against the New York Giants on Sunday.

There were substantial thoughts that came out concerning why the team chose to part ways with Diggs at what was otherwise an irregular moment, before head coach Brian Schottenheimer gave a slightly more informative story as to what transpired between the two parties.

Diggs was subsequently claimed off of waivers by the Green Bay Packers on New Years’ Eve; a team that many regarded as a strong fit for the two-time Pro Bowler – especially considering his close friendship with Green Bay edge rusher, Micah Parsons.

The new-Packers corner also signed NFL super-agent, David Mulugheta to be his new representative, who perhaps uncoincidentally also negotiated Parsons’ 4 year, $186 million extension with the Midwest franchise last August in the wake of the blockbuster trade.

Jerry Jones Praises Trevon Diggs’ Ability

And now, speaking on 105 The Fan, owner and general manager, Jerry Jones gave the world some insight into what his thoughts are on the situation that occurred with Diggs.

“I thought Trevon had one of the most impressive beginnings in pro football and with the Cowboys that I’ve ever been associated with. I personally think that there’s things that Trevon did back when he first came in the NFL that he physically has been compromised with to do.” Jones said on Friday.

“And one of the things that he could do is something similar to what Deion Sanders could do. Deion could make a mistake, or he could bait a player, and then he had the burst to make up for it and go back and make the play and get the ball.”

Is Trevon Diggs Still A High-Level Cornerback In The NFL?

Perhaps interestingly, Jones went on to talk about Diggs’ physical and playmaking ability for the team in the past-tense, potentially indicating that he and the franchise do not believe he is the same player who starred for Dallas less than half a decade ago.

“Certainly Diggs had that early, he would go be out of position but not really because he’d intercept the ball… He was a brilliant athlete, and he was a natural ball hawk. He was like a receiver, he would go to the ball. That takes pristine talent and pristine reaction and reflexes. So consequently, a combination of all of that is the reason we paid him. He deserved to be paid… I wish him well.”

Cleary Diggs has not shown the kind of play-quality that the team and fans were used to seeing across his first three years in the league, but the use of the past-tense – rhetoric that is normally served for players either post or close-to retirement, could be seen as a small jab from the owner.

But, other than that, the words are evidently kind, and speak otherwise with no anger or bitterness. Perhaps if Diggs revives his career with Green Bay, Jones’ tone may become less cheery in the future.
