Guillermo del Toro celebrated a big win at the Palm Springs Film Awards on Saturday, January 3. He was awarded the Visionary Award for his work on the film âFrankenstein.â But his win has occurred while he is mourning the loss of his beloved brother.Â
Guillermo del Toro Reveals Loss of His Brother
Del Toro was joined onstage at the Palm Springs Convention Center by his âFrankensteinâ cast, including Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, to accept the award, and he took the time to celebrate his work and share a deeply personal message about loss. âIâve come to believe that everybodyâs born with one or two songs to sing. Thatâs it, and we keep repeating them and repeating them until we get them sort of right. And âFrankensteinâ was the song I was born to sing,â he told the crowd, The Hollywood Reporter reports.Â
The director approached the story of Frankenstein in a new way, and he explained why he chose to focus it around âfatherhood and forgiveness,â saying, âI believe that we want to be forgiven and forgive. And now, very recently, something has became very clear to me. Three days ago, I lost my older brother but Iâm here, and Iâm here because the film speaks about a condition that is purely human; that is proved by the final phase in the film, which says the heart may break and the broken live on. Even a broken heart pumps the blood and keeps you going.â
The director did not share how his brother died or offer any more information about his passing, but he did reflect on how they played the roles of âVictor and the creature on many moments in our lives.â He continued, âMany years ago, we granted each other love and granted each other peace. So Iâm here for family.â
Jacob Elordi Shares Thoughts on Meeting Guillermo del Toro
âFrankensteinâ is generating a lot of award buzz, and the cast, especially Elordi, has been celebrated for their phenomenal performances. In an appearance on âThe Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,â the actor reflected on how he first met del Toro.
The short clip was shared on Instagram on January 3, he says, âWhen you meet an artist of that magnitude thatâs affected your life and everyoneâs sort of life for so long, you just have to let them know how important their work is.” Fans reacted to it with praise.
âJacobâs so humble, appreciative and so polite! Love this guy!â a fan shared. âJacob is always so polite and kind in all his interviews. He seems like an amazing person to have around,â another person shared.Â
A third comment reads, âOh Mr Elordi you have such a genuine spark! You are so admired Jacob! And @jimmyfallon you really do have a way of connecting, such a natural charisma.â
