Colts’ Coordinator Linked To Promising Head Coaching Job

Ending the 2025-26 season on a 7-game losing streak, there were rumors that the Indianapolis Colts would move on from head coach Shane Steichen.

After some decision-making from higher-ups in the organization, it was decided that Steichen would remain head coach for another season. In three seasons at the helm of the team, the head coach has accrued a 25-26 record with the Colts.

Indy has made just one major coaching staff change throughout Steichen’s tenure, parting ways with defensive coordinator Gus Bradley after the 2024-25 season and replacing him by hiring Lou Anarumo  — Colts have kept Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator throughout Steichen’s time.

But after recent news, Indianapolis may have to make another change in its coaching staff.

Lou Anarumo Linked To Head Coaching Job

Lou Anarumo joined the Indianapolis Colts as its defensive coordinator after holding the same position with the Cincinnati Bengals for the previous six seasons.

But after just one season in Indy, the Colts may have to look elsewhere for their DC after it was reported that the New York Giants will hold an interview with Anarumo for its vacant head coaching job.

The Colts’ DC was able to hold up well in his first season in Indianapolis, with the defense allowing 101.9 rushing yards per game this season, the seventh-fewest in the league. As for the Giants, they allowed 145.3 rushing yards per game, the second-worst in the NFL.

Both teams recorded 39 sacks this season, but Anarumo’s Colts did not have players of Brian Burns‘ caliber, who recorded 16.5 sacks this season. Second-year EDGE rusher Laiatu Latu recorded 8.5 sacks for Indy, the most on the squad.

What makes the Giants a promising head coaching job is having Jaxson Dart as quarterback, who has shown promising glimpses, and having the fifth-overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Anarumo is no stranger to wanting to become a head coach in the National Football League, as he was in contention for the head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals back in 2023 when he was still with the Bengals.

Other Options On The Block

Mike Kafka

While Lou Anarumo is set to have an interview with the Giants, other candidates have already met or will meet with the Giants organization.

Interim head coach Mike Kafka is one of the candidates to become the next official coach of the team. The players on the coaching staff have chemistry with Kafka, who was the assistant HC and offensive coordinator, and will be a benefit to players who will remain with New York, especially for a developing quarterback in Jaxson Dart.

Former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is also a top candidate to become the next head coach. Harbaugh would bring over 17 years of head coaching and vast playoff experience to the Giants if hired.

Anarumo also has Super Bowl experience, serving as the DC for the Bengals, who faced off against the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021-22 season.

Compared to some of the other options that don’t have the same experience, the defensive coordinator could stand out in the hiring process for any team that decides to request an interview with him.
