The New Orleans Saints finally gave fans something firmer to work with on Alvin Kamara.
After days of trade buzz following New Orleans’ addition of Travis Etienne, head coach Kellen Moore said Kamara is “certainly” on the roster and that the team expects him to be with the Saints this season. For a player whose future suddenly looked shaky, that qualifies as the strongest public signal yet that New Orleans is not preparing to move on right now. Moore made the comments on March 30 at during the NFL’s team meetings.
That matters because this rumor cycle did not come out of nowhere. Once Etienne arrived, Kamara quickly became one of the more talked-about veteran names on the roster. Now, Moore’s comments have given Saints fans their clearest indication yet that the team still sees Kamara as part of its immediate plans.
Why Alvin Kamara Trade Rumors Picked Up
The trade talk had real fuel behind it.
When the Saints agreed to terms with Etienne, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that teams around the league were already tracking the situation and wondering whether Kamara might be available. Around the same time, national and team-focused coverage began treating Kamara as a legitimate trade candidate, not just an offseason hypothetical.
That speculation grew because the Saints had already given people reason to wonder about Kamara’s long-term status. ESPN’s Katherine Terrell reported earlier this month that Kamara’s future in New Orleans was uncertain after the Saints used an unusual contract mechanism tied to the league’s 50% rule. That added another layer to the idea that the team could be preparing to get younger at running back.
Then came Etienne, and the logic got even easier to follow.
If New Orleans wanted more speed and youth in the backfield, Etienne looked like the kind of addition that could change Kamara’s outlook. That is why teams reportedly started monitoring the situation, and why Kamara quickly became part of the broader trade conversation around the league.
Kellen Moore’s Comments Change the Picture
What changed now is the tone from Moore.
Earlier this month, Moore was much less direct when asked about Kamara’s future. Reports at the time described him as noncommittal after the Etienne move, which only kept the speculation alive. This time, though, he offered a much firmer answer by saying Kamara is on the roster and expected to stay with the team this season.
That does not erase every question surrounding Kamara’s long-term future. It does, however, push back against the idea that a move is right around the corner.
And that is the important distinction for Saints fans.
If the team were actively preparing to move on from Kamara in the near term, Moore had every opportunity to stay vague again. Instead, he gave a much more reassuring public answer. That does not guarantee anything months from now, but it is still the strongest indication yet that New Orleans is not treating Kamara like a player on the way out.
What Kamara Staying Means for the Saints’ Backfield
For Saints fans, the biggest takeaway is simple: Kamara still looks like part of the plan.
Rather than viewing Etienne strictly as Kamara’s replacement, the Saints may be looking at the two backs as pieces who can coexist in the same offense. That would make sense for a team trying to rework its identity under Moore without stripping away one of its most proven offensive players.
It also changes the feel of the backfield heading into the season.
Instead of a clean transition from Kamara to Etienne, New Orleans now looks more like a team trying to blend veteran production with younger explosiveness. Kamara’s experience and versatility still matter, and Etienne’s arrival gives the Saints another dynamic option without necessarily forcing an immediate exit.
That does not mean the conversation is over forever. Kamara’s contract situation helped create legitimate questions, and the Saints’ offseason moves clearly signaled a desire to refresh parts of the roster. But for now, the clearest update is also the most important one: New Orleans is publicly talking like Alvin Kamara is staying.
