The Chennai Super Kings suffered an embarrassing defeat in T20 cricket at the hands of the Rajasthan Royals. In the third match of the IPL 2026 tournament, RR put on a bowling clinic before dismantling CSK’s bowlers with an impressive batting performance.
With that sports match in the rearview, here are seven things from the scorecard and points table that you likely missed from last night’s match.
Sanju Samson’s Early Dismissal
First things first, this writer went 0 for 3 with predictions for this match. The biggest duck was predicting that Sanju Samson would still be batting in the 16th over while recording 80+ runs.
Sadly for CSK, that turned out not to be the case.
Instead, Samson was the first to fall in the wickets at the end of the second over. He fell victim to an incredible delivery from Nandre Burger.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Impressive 50-Knock
The 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi recorded his third 50 of his very young IPL career. Unfortunately, things didn’t go well for the youngster; however, he did finish the match with the highest score among the batters.
Suryavanshi finished the match with a 52-run, four-fours, and five-sixes knock to open the IPL 2026 tournament.
Jofra Archer’s Dot Ball Collection
There have been several impressive bowling performances in the first three matches of the new IPL season. RR’s Jofra Archer was one of many great bowling performances from this single match.
While his two wickets were the most that any bowler scalped in the match, something else he achieved was equally impressive. Archer collected 17 dot balls while only surrendering 19 runs in four overs.
Archers’ 17 dot balls immediately make him the league leader in that category.
Burger, Jadeja, & Archer Lead Bowling Clinic
The combination of Nandre Burger, Ravindra Jadeja, and Archer collected 42 dot balls in RR’s first match of the year. That’s a very good sign for the squad.
Having multiple bowling options who can take wickets and limit the opposition’s knocks is imperative to winning matches in a highly competitive tournament like the IPL.
RR’s Powerplay Dominance
The powerplay is a great place to see which team pulls ahead. By the end of CSK’s powerplay they were down four wickets with only 41 runs scored. At the end of RR’s powerplay? They were up 74 points with all 10 wickets intact.
This ended up being one of the biggest differences between the two teams, and the biggest reason why RR won the match.
Jamie Overton Long Bright Spot
Sadly for CSK, they will need to contemplate some playing 11 changes for their next match. Of the 11 players who swung a bat, only one of them recorded more than 18 runs.
Jamie Overton was the long bright spot when CSK went up to bat first. He recorded 48 runs, the second-most of the match. While his bowling wasn’t spectacular, his bat kept their innings from being much worse than it could have been.
Rajasthan Royals Soar To First Place
The final surprise from this match is a big one for RR fans. Because of the NRR tiebreaker, RR sit in first place in the points table after the first three matches of the season.
Here is a very early points table after the RR vs CSK match.
- RR – 2 pts, 4.171 NRR
- RCB – 2 pts, 2.907 NRR
- MI – 2 pts, 0.687 NRR
