Euphoria season three is just around the corner after a four-year wait, but fans fear the worst for its lead character, Rue (played by Zendaya).
The latest trailer for the Sam Levinson-created HBO Max series has dropped, shedding some startling insight into where our cohort of messy high-school teens turned even messier young adults are now.
Also starring Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Maude Apatow, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie and Colman Domingo, we’re once more being plunged into a world of toxic love, sex and drug addiction.
It opens to Rue, who has found herself mixed up in a narcotics-related investigation against her will after finding herself in Mexico to pay off her debts to drug dealer Laurie (Martha Kelly).
As she narrates ominously in the trailer: ‘In the beginning, we had to make a choice. About who we were and what we wanted. But what we didn’t realise was how far we were willing to go.
Meanwhile, Cassie and Nate are entering married life on shaky ground, Jules is in art school, and Maddy is at a Hollywood talent agency where she’s told execs have shown interest in a storyline she’s pitched.
The late Eric Dane will also make a posthumous appearance as his character, Cal Jacobs.
The stakes this season seem higher than ever as Rue desperately tries to get out of the sticky situation she’s in with a newly introduced character, Alamo (played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), who is seen loading a gun at one point.
Later, we see a harrowed, and visibly injured Rue tell (an offscreen) Laurie: ‘Alamo tried to kill me. And he’s gonna do the same to you.’
At another point, we once more see more religious imagery linked to her character as she clutches the Bible in her arms. And in a conversation with her mentor and sponsor, Ali, he tells her: ‘You wanna undo the evil you’ve done? Start by changing yourself.’
The threat of Rue’s death, however, has fans worried that it could happen, whether through being targeted or through an overdose, and that the ‘trailer may have confirmed it’.
Reddit user Late_Information_682 wrote: ‘Someone is already out to kill her and I wouldn’t be surprised if she does end up dead, especially since she narrates the entire series from her perspective.
‘We always see Rue in a church too, don’t ask me what that has to do with anything, I just feel it in my soul.’
Another user, uwill1der, posed: ‘Rue is just Maddy’s storyline, she is using her experience as Rue’s bff to write it all out’.
Cadalic_Man_3019 theorised she’ll ‘undergo a shocking death scene’ after succeeding in her mission.
They added: ‘Imagine thinking she’s in the clear then, bam, she gets murdered by one of the drug dealers or Laurie herself, like how Adam Sandler’s character in Uncut Gems did in the ending.’
Although not all hope is lost, with PossibleMess sharing: ‘I think she is lying, like setting up a trap for Laurie.’
Rue is not the only one fans think could be in mortal danger. Some have theorised that Maddy and Cassie are ‘plotting’ to kill Nate, with one scene of him alone at home showing him dropping his glass in horror as a window is smashed in.
Are you excited for the return of Euphoria?

Yes, finally!
-
Nope, I’ve lost interest
-
I’ve never seen it
‘RIP Nate (in advance),’ misterterrifc0 wrote.
‘He’s dying at or immediately after the wedding, do we think? All his scenes give me the vibe they take place in the same episode or 2,’ No-Clocks5963 shared.
‘You just made me realize that Maddy and Cassie are probably teaming up to kill Nate,’ Initial-Lemon-1957 declared.
Whatever happens, it is guaranteed to be an edge-of-your-seat watch as we catch up with this cast one last time.
Euphoria season three premieres on HBO Max on Sunday, April 12.
