Former Patriots Star Trolls Fanbase with Viral April Fools Stunt

Former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman trolled fans on April Fools’ Day with an epic prank on social media. The wide receiver posted that he would be returning to the organization, which may have fooled fans at first. However, a quick look at the calendar may have made people catch on to the joke a bit quicker.

Edelman Gets Patriots Fans Talking

Edelman retired from the game of football on April 12, 2021. It ended a 12-season career exclusively with the Patriots organization. Knee injuries caused him to play only six games in the 2020 season. The Patriots terminated his contract due to a failed physical, which accelerated his retirement plan.

Does he have an itch to play again? No one will ever know the real answer, but he certainly got fans excited on social media.

The wide receiver’s career was remarkable. He was able to establish himself as a franchise legend, and it always seemed like he was able to play well in big moments. He played 137 games over the course of the regular season and recorded 620 receptions. The receptions ranked second in franchise history. He also tallied 6,822 receiving yards, good enough for fourth in franchise history and 36 total receiving touchdowns.

The Kent State product also established himself as a multi-faceted player during his time in the league. The wide receiver had 413 rushing yards and played a role on special teams. He tallied 1,986 punt return yards and four punt return touchdowns.

Edelman Was Postseason Star For Patriots

All of those accolades are impressive. However, Edelman was able to really stand out during the postseason. He became a key postseason receiver, and was responsible for many of the Patriots’ big plays throughout his career. This included a touchdown throw to a wide-open Danny Amendola in the 2014 AFC Divisional game against the Baltimore Ravens.

A late fourth-quarter grab by Edelman in Super Bowl LI, allowed the Patriots to continue their comeback and eventual victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Perhaps the biggest honor of them all was being named MVP of Super Bowl LII against the Los Angeles Rams. He recorded 10 receptions for 141 yards. Edelman became only the seventh wide receiver to ever be named Super Bowl MVP.

Edelman could help the current Patriots wide receiver room when healthy. However, he repeatedly indicated that his body was breaking down towards the end of his career. He did his time for the organization and was one of Tom Brady’s favorite weapons. It would certainly be fascinating to see what he could do for the Patriots right now, and if he could add the playmaking element to the wide receiver room to this day. He had some of the best instincts on the field when with the Patriots, and had a habit of always being in the right spot on any given play.

That being said, it looks like he is sitting on the proverbial sidelines for the foreseeable future. Edelman certainly gave Patriots fans great memories and will forever remain a legend in the New England region.
