Masters 2026: Augusta National Confirms Tiger Woods Won’t Play

Perhaps we all saw this coming. But the anticipation was good while it lasted.

Heavy first wrote back in February that Tiger Woods hadn’t ruled out participating in the 2026 Masters, which tees off on Thursday, April 9. Even after his most recent back surgery in October, the 15-time major winner appeared to be ramping up for a full four-day tournament. He was even at Augusta National in early March to help unveil the nine-hole short course he helped design. (And probably get a couple of practice holes in as well.)

But a lot has changed over the last five or so days. After being arrested in Florida last Friday, it looked less and less like Woods would make a triumphant return.

Now, the storied links that host the first major of the season have weighed in.  And it looks like Woods’ quest for another green jacket is over.

Statement from Augusta National on Tiger Woods

Shortly after Woods announced he would be “stepping away” to receive treatment, Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley confirmed the five-time Masters winner would not be at this year’s event.

“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being. Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta.”

The statement echoes Woods’ own announcement, which follows his arrest on suspicion of DUI in a single-car crash in Jupiter Island, Florida.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said in a social media post on Tuesday night. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself at this time.”

Woods had just pleaded not guilty to “charges of misdemeanor DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test,” ESPN summarized.

PGA Tour Shows Support for Tiger Woods

Although the reason for stepping away from golf is unfortunate, the PGA Tour showed support in Woods’ decision to step away from golf.

“Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course,” read a statement via the PGA Tour website. “But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well‑being. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step.”

“Tiger Woods is one of the most influential figures the sports world has ever known,” PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp added in his own statement. “Over the last year, I have come to deeply appreciate Tiger not only for his impact on the game, but for his friendship and the perspective he has shared with me as I joined the golf industry. My thoughts are with him and his family as he takes this step, for which he has my full respect and support.”
