Disgraced BBC News presenter Huw Edwards has hit back at Channel 5’s new drama about him with a promise to share his own version of events.
In September 2024, Edwards, 64, was sentenced to a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting to three counts of making indecent images of children, and was placed on the sex offender register.
The events leading up to this, which involved his communication with convicted paedophile Alex Williams, a groomed teenager in contact with Edwards over WhatsApp and his subsequent arrest, are dramatised in Channel 5’s new show.
Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards stars Martin Clunes, and its contents have prompted the ex-TV personality to release his own statement.
He said: ‘Much has been written and reported in the past week following Channel 5’s one-sided account.
‘Other opportunities will arise later this year for me to state my case and to challenge the misleading or fabricated claims made in recent coverage.
‘A number of serious questions still remain to be answered, and not just by me. It will now take some time for me to produce my own account, and until then I do not intend to comment any further.’
This is not the first time Edwards has spoken out against the show, claiming last month that the network ‘no attempt to check with me the truth of any aspect of their narrative’.
In a statement, Channel 5 has previously said: ‘Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards is based on extensive interviews with the victim, his family, the journalists who revealed his story, text exchanges between the victim and Edwards, and court reporting.
‘It has been produced in accordance with Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code. All allegations made in the film were put to Huw Edwards via his solicitors six weeks before transmission.’
Edwards was initially arrested in September 2023 and later suspended in April 2024 after a 40-year career before his sentencing in September that year.
The drama left Channel 5 viewers feeling ‘sickened’ at what the show revealed.
Earlier this week, Edwards was also spotted liking a LinkedIn post relating to Scott Mills’ shock sacking from the BBC following a complaint about a police investigation into ‘serious sexual offences against a boy under 16’.
