Kristaps Porzingis is approaching a critical offseason with no firm decision yet on where he will play next — even as the Golden State Warriors make clear they view him as more than a short-term addition.
The veteran forward, acquired by Golden State ahead of the trade deadline, said he is focused on finishing the season before turning his attention to free agency.
“It’s hard to say,” Porzingis told The Athletic after Thursday’s 118-111 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. “Of course, it would be nice for me to say I want to continue here. But the reality is I didn’t have a good year at all. I barely showed what I’m capable of. So I have to see what’s out there.”
Warriors Leave Door Open for Return
While Porzingis remains undecided, the Warriors have already signaled interest in keeping him.
General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said earlier this season that the organization sees Porzingis as part of its broader vision.
“We see him as more than a rental,” Dunleavy said in a March 6 interview with ESPN. “We feel he can help our team this year, better our playoff position, and then moving forward fits what we are looking for.”
That stance suggests Golden State could pursue a longer-term agreement, depending on how the final stretch of the season unfolds.
Porzingis Production Building, But Warriors Performance Lags
Porzingis has shown flashes of his offensive skill set since arriving in the Bay Area.
He recorded 16 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in Golden State’s most recent game, though the performance came in a fourth consecutive loss.
Across 12 appearances with the Warriors, Porzingis is averaging 17.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists.
However, the team has gone 4-8 in those games, and Porzingis holds a minus-10 plus-minus during that span — numbers that reflect both his individual contributions and the broader adjustment process within the rotation.
The midseason deal that brought him to Golden State involved former lottery pick Jonathan Kuminga, underscoring the significance of the move for the franchise.
Health and Conditioning Still Evolving
After multiple injury setbacks over the past two seasons, Porzingis is still working his way back to full form.
He emphasized that regaining conditioning has been his primary focus since returning to the lineup.
“For me, I just wanted first to get to decent shape,” he said. “And then kind of see the whole picture, not to put too much pressure on myself.”
Porzingis also dealt with an illness earlier in his Warriors tenure, which he indicated may be tied in part to his postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) diagnosis.
Potential Fit With Curry Yet to Be Tested

A key unknown in evaluating Porzingis’ future in Golden State is how he meshes with Stephen Curry.
Curry is expected to return Sunday after a lengthy absence, creating a limited opportunity for the two to share the court before the postseason.
Porzingis acknowledged that uncertainty while remaining optimistic.
“Who knows? Maybe we get out there and we can’t play together,” he said. “But I think we will click.”
He added that Curry’s ability to draw defensive attention could simplify scoring opportunities.
“He draws so much attention that it’s going to make everybody’s life easier,” Porzingis said.
Medical Stability Could Influence Decision
Porzingis also pointed to the organization’s medical staff as a factor he will weigh moving forward.
He has developed confidence in the team’s performance group, led by Rick Celebrini.
“I believe I’m in incredible hands here,” Porzingis said. “That means something.”
For a player whose career has been shaped by injuries, that support system may carry added importance in free agency.
Final Stretch Holds Added Importance
With only a handful of games remaining, Porzingis is focused on building momentum and evaluating his fit within the Warriors’ system.
His performance down the stretch — along with the team’s trajectory — could play a role in shaping his decision.
For now, his approach remains measured.
