Per KenPom — the industry leader in college basketball analytics — Illinois is favored by four points in a closely contested game. But these teams have some similarities as well as some starkly contrasted differences, and UConn is far from a serious underdog in this game.

UConn is lead by their defense, a top-10 defense in the country. They are elite at defending the paint and forcing teams into taking tough, contested two-point shots, the least efficient shot in basketball. The Huskies rebound well, preventing extra opportunities for the opposing offense, and they force turnovers at a high clip.

Meanwhile, Illinois has the best offense in the sport, per KenPom. They are an elite offensive rebounding team and simply do not turn the ball over on offense, the third-best team in the nation at avoiding turnovers. They make a high percentage of their shots inside the arc, particularly in the paint, and they have some of the best individual offensive creators in the game.

On the other end of the floor, UConn doesn’t get to the free throw line on offense, and Illinois never fouls. The Huskies rebound well on the offensive glass and are a good shooting team — but Illinois is better at rebounding and has more size.

There’s one specific area where UConn’s advantages stand out.

UConn vs. Illinois: The Huskies Have One Major Advantage Over the Fighting Illini

Illinois takes a lot of three-point shots. Like, a lot of them. Over 38 percent of their points come from behind the arc, one of the highest percentages in the country.

But UConn doesn’t let teams shoot it from behind the arc. They are an elite, elite three-point defense, preventing teams from shooting them often and forcing misses when they do. UConn will try and force Illinois into a jump-shooting team, and they’ll be poised to take advantage.

UConn vs. Illinois might very well come down to a pure shooting contest. With their defense, UConn has to feel good about their chances if it does.
