After tossing 6.1 scoreless innings against the Seattle Mariners, Cam Schlittler became the first New York Yankees pitcher to allow zero runs with zero walks while recording at least 15 strikeouts in a two-game span, per New York Post Sports. The right-hander can extend his historic performance in a matchup on Tuesday, April 7, against the Athletics.
Schlittler has spearheaded a New York rotation that has carried the club to a 7-2 start. The Yankees currently sit atop the AL East after taking two of three games from the Miami Marlins. Schlittler, Max Fried, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers have combined for a league-leading 1.81 ERA. The starting unit ranks second with a 0.89 WHIP. The Yankees’ rotation has racked up five victories in nine attempts.
New York opted for a four-man rotation to begin the year. Several off-days in the early going allowed the team to roll with an extra reliever. That will change this week, as Tuesday’s matchup will kick off a run of 13 straight games.
New York Yankees Right-Hander Cam Schlittler Makes Franchise History
Schlittler kicked off his 2026 campaign with a dazzling effort against the San Francisco Giants. He cruised through 5.1 scoreless innings on just 68 pitches. Schlittler permitted just one baserunner, a two-out double by Heliot Ramos in the 2nd inning. He coaxed a groundout from Casey Schmitt to quell the threat. Home runs by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in the 6th inning provided all the run support Schlitter would need in the 3-0 victory.
Stifling the hapless Giants is one thing, but the Mariners are a true test. Schlitter was even better against the reigning AL West champs. The young righty notched his first quality start of the season en route to a 5-3 win. Schlittler struck out seven and held Seattle to just a pair of baserunners.
Schlittler gave up a leadoff double to Brendan Donovan to begin the game, but stranded him by navigating through the dangerous trio of Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez, and Josh Naylor. After a one-out single by Luke Raley in the 2nd inning, Schlittler retired 15 consecutive hitters. He capped off his outing by getting Rodriguez to ground out to start the 7th inning. Fernando Cruz came on to finish the inning. Camilo Doval and David Bednar allowed three runs across the 8th and 9th innings, but New York held on for the victory.
Schlittler Takes On Scuffling Athletics
The Athletics are off to a rough start to the 2026 season. The club was swept by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first series of the year. They dropped a pair to the Atlanta Braves, but did finally earn a win in the middle game of the series. The A’s then took two of three matchups from the Houston Astros. That three-game set finished with a wild 12-10 walkoff win, with Brent Rooker sending the Sacramento faithful home happy on a game-ending three-run home run.
After a brutal offensive beginning to the season, the dozen runs on Sunday moved the A’s to 13th in scoring. The club is eighth in home runs after Rooker socked a couple of long balls yesterday.
