Firefighters battling the Trinity fire in San Bernardino County on Friday documented a rare sight: an ash devil.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department and Cal Fire posted video on social media of crews working to extinguish the wildfire, which broke out near Phelan just before noon.
An ash devil forms when intense heat makes the air rise and spin, combining ash, embers and debris into a rotating column, similar to a dust devil or tornado. It’s an uncommon occurrence.
“Ash devils can create serious challenges on the fireline by spreading embers and igniting spot fires in multiple directions, causing unpredictable wind shifts, and reducing visibility for crews working nearby,” the post says.
Unlike dust devils, which typically happen in sunny, clear weather, ash devils can appear in areas of high heat, often after a fire has been suppressed.
They also have been associated with volcanoes in Hawaii. “The long, ashy gray or brown, ropy cloud-like structures tend to appear near or downwind of active lava fountains,” the U.S. Geological Survey states on its website.
Crews from Cal Fire, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, Victorville Fire Department, and Apple Valley Fire worked together to contain the Trinity fire at 18.6 acres. There were no injuries, and no damage to buildings was reported.
