SZA made a celebrated return to the Met Gala, themed “Costume Art” in 2026 — her first appearance at the event in four years.

But her highly sustainable, custom-made golden yellow gown, designed by Emily Adams Bode Aujla, was more than a fashion moment. It was a masterclass in storytelling, blending high-fashion craftsmanship with global craft traditions and profound personal history.

The resulting aesthetic was widely praised, with fans and critics calling it an ethereal, “fairy” masterpiece. Furthermore, the complex details woven into the fabric and accessories elevate this look beyond mere celebrity attire. They turn it into an emotional statement that connects SZA’s past, present, and future.

The Bode Aujla creation was built on a foundation of sustainability, constructed using over 100 yards of vintage, re-worked fabric. This included material specifically sourced from eBay. Notably, this eco-conscious approach resonated perfectly with the gown’s delicate, otherworldly appearance.

The sweeping silhouette and bold marigold color took inspiration from the Wiener Werkstätte. This was an early 20th-century Viennese design collective known for its intense dedication to the natural world.

The complex details layered onto the 18th-century robe française-influenced design were breathtaking. The ensemble incorporated sari remnants, beautiful antique rhinestones from Europe, and European cabochons. Moreover, it featured hand-painted silk wings, which served as a butterfly-inspired cape.

Unconventionally, the dress featured integrated jewelry, with antique rhinestones and quartz beads from New York sewn directly into the fabric instead of being worn separately, according to Vogue. To complete the “ethereal body” SZA described as representing “the divine feminine” and joy, she wore a custom floral headpiece. This natural crowning glory featured real flowers, including moth orchids, calla lilies, and pincushion protea. In addition, it was adorned with champagne-colored jewels and cowrie shells.

The Emotional Meaning Behind the Details

Beyond the stunning design and craftsmanship, the heart of SZA’s 2026 Met Gala look was a loving tribute to her late grandmother, Norma. SZA accessorized her high-fashion ensemble with custom grills featuring her grandmother’s name, Norma, alongside her favorite bible verse.

This honor comes from a deep, long-standing connection. Norma Rowe (also known as Norma Jean) was a central figure in the artist’s life and artistic journey. In fact, SZA’s critically acclaimed debut album, “Ctrl” features her grandmother’s voice and wisdom.

The death of her grandmother was a turning point for SZA, who described it as “breaking the threshold” of her grief, which led to a period of deep depression and a temporary hiatus from music. Her appearance at the 2026 Met Gala, following a four-year break, represents a powerful step forward.

The significance of the relationship is well-known to fans, as SZA proudly took her grandmother as her date to the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018. This turned out to be a moment where Norma publicly shared how proud she was after fully realizing the scale of her granddaughter’s music career.

SZA continues her tradition of honoring Norma by featuring a Met Gala tribute to her grandmother, whose name she also has tattooed on her neck.

The whole ensemble stood as a beautiful, joyous statement of transformation and memory, perfectly aligned with SZA’s theme of the “ethereal body”.
