A man in his 80s died after falling into a grain silo on his farm in Lancashire.
The accident happened at a farm in Burscough, north of Ormskirk, on Thursday when the farmer plunged inside the storage structure.
Emergency services rushed to the Orrell Farm to rescue the man, who has been named locally as John.
Crews cut open the silo in a bid to reach him, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he had known John and his wife for years, and that the pair ‘kept themselves to themselves,’ Liverpool Echo reports.
The neighbour said: ‘We saw all the emergency services arrive at the scene. The firefighters were doing work on the silo, I think they had to cut into it.
‘It’s so sad, he was a nice man, and had not long farmed all the grain from the fields. Even at his age he was still out on the fields farming.’

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: ‘At 4:37pm on Thursday 21 May we were called to reports of an industrial accident at a farm on Orrell Lane, Burscough.
‘Emergency services attended and very sadly a man in his 80s was found deceased.
‘Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time and they are being support by specially trained officers.
‘His death is not being treated as suspicious.’
The work-related industrial accident is being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive.
