Harry Styles was my first concert in 12 years — I’ve been missing out

I have avoided live music for more than a decade. Can Harry Styles change my mind? (Picture: Anthony Pham)

For more than a decade now, somehow, I have managed to avoid going to a live concert, and I’m just as confused as you, really.

For one reason or another, whenever the idea of a concert gets floated about among my friends or family, I always opt to stay at home in the comfort of my own home.

Why sit on a crammed tube when I can plug in my headphones and enjoy the exact same song without any of the hassle?

However, after attending Harry Stylesopening concert at Wembley, where he is due to play 11 more shows, I can well and truly say – what on earth have I been doing with my life?

My last concert happened to be Eminem at Wembley in 2014.

Prior to that, it was Jay Z and Kanye West a couple of years prior, at the same venue. It appears that I’ve got a strong track record when it comes to seeing live artists at Wembley.

However, as I made my way towards Wembley to see Harry, I couldn’t help but think of the numerous different football games I had been to in the past.

From watching Tottenham in the Champions League to seeing West Ham in the Championship playoff, here was a different kind of fan base that I was used to, one that was adorned in pink cowboy hats.

But I was actually struck by how similar the experience was from football to music and how passionate these fans were.

Following an impressive display from Shania Twain as the opener and Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water getting blasted out over the stage’s massive speakers, the show began with a suited and booted Harry making his way onto the stage.

Still feeling hesitant about what a concert could bring to my life, suddenly, it was like I had stepped into a church, and the former One Direction man was God.

His opening two ballads of Ready, Steady, Go and Watermelon Sugar well and truly had me and the thousands of audience members in the palm of his hand.

After paying tribute to some of his earlier singles, from the likes of Coming Up Roses and Falling, people around me suddenly started to break down in tears, much to my confusion.

But the 32-year-old summed it up perfectly when he reminded the audience how special it is for each and every one of us to come together and enjoy such wonderful music.

How and why I have been denying myself such a public opportunity of joy where so many people can come together to enjoy wonderful music still remains a mystery to me.

But if Harry has taught me one thing, it’s that I need to attend several more concerts in my lifetime.

The message is heard loud and clear, Harry.
