In her post-birth return to YouTube, Molly-Mae Hague has revealed the inspiration behind the name of her baby boy, Midas Thomas Fury – and it’s not what you might expect.

The 27-year-old came back onto the video platform after the birth of her second child with boxer Tommy Fury, and explained how they came to deciding on the unusual name.

In the 29-minute long vlog, Molly-Mae recalled how some fans thought she had taken inspiration from Greek mythology, specifically King Midas.

He appears as the ruler of Phrygia who is granted any wish, and chooses to have everything he touches turn to gold – a move that turns out to be foolish, and a warning against greed, when even his daughter becomes a statue.

Molly-Mae explained: ‘I saw a few comments being like: “King Midas was a fool in Greek mythology. This is just so silly if she’s called her son this.”‘

The former Love Island star then revealed: ‘I actually found the name from watching a film called Real Steel.’

Admitting it was ‘random’ that she liked the movie, Molly-Mae went on: ‘It’s actually such a great film, it’s got Hugh Jackman in it. And it’s a film about robots boxing…’

She laughed at herself, before going into more detail: ‘One of the robots in the film that was boxing was called Midas, and I heard the name and I thought… This was years ago… I was like: “Wow, that’s a really cool, strong name. Midas? I’ve never heard of that before.”‘

The influencer said she then mentioned it to Tommy, who ‘absolutely fell in love with it’, and thus their boy name was decided.

Real Steel, starring the Les Misérables actor, is a 2011 sci-fi action film about an out-of-luck boxer whose fortune changes when he and his son team up to build a champion robot fighter.

Earlier in the video, Molly-Mae talked more about the connotations the name held with the Greek king: ‘I believe the story is that everything he [King Midas] touches turns to gold and I do absolutely just love that saying.’

Recording on June 12, the day before Tommy’s big fight against Eddie Hall, Molly-Mae talked about her partner’s shorts which she designed with baby Midas in mind: ‘When Tommy wears his kit tomorrow, inside the kit […] we’ve put a little patch inside that says: “Everything he touches turns to gold.”‘

She clarified that, like Bambi who isn’t necessarily named after the Disney cartoon, Midas isn’t necessarily named after the Greek king.

On June 13, Tommy revealed his son’s name after walking out for his fight with it spelt out on his waistband in gold lettering.

Molly-Mae watched ringside as her partner defeated Eddie on points in the fight at Manchester’s AO Arena.
