Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry has secured a very attractive loan move to Sporting after signing a new deal with the Blues.

The 19-year-old made his first team debut last season, making three appearances during a chaotic campaign for the club.

It was a swift rise into senior contention for the teenager as he only joined from Crystal Palace in 2025, having come through the youth ranks at Selhurst Park.

He may have made just one appearance in the Premier League and two in the FA Cup, but Derry has already attracted the attention of big clubs across Europe.

Bayern Munich were credited with an interest in him this summer, but he will be heading to Lisbon for a season to continue his development.

Portuguese outlet Record report that Derry will spend a year with Sporting after signing a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

The report notes that there was also interest in him from Premier League clubs Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest and from Southampton in the Championship.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard was also keen to bring Derry in on loan to newly-promoted Coventry City.

Instead of staying relatively local, Derry will join a side competing in the Champions League after Sporting finished second in the Primeira Liga last season.

Derry – the son of former QPR, Leeds and Crystal Palace player Shaun – has been capped up to Under-19 level by England.

He scored twice in the group stage of the 2025 Under-19 European Championship, although England were eliminated after finishing third behind Netherlands and Germany.

Derry has also caught the eye of Rio Ferdinand, who last season hailed him as one of the four brightest young talents in the top flight.

Speaking on his said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, the Manchester United hero said: ‘If you were going to put your money on four kids right now, in the Premier League to do their thing, based on what you’re seeing now, you’ve got Rio at Liverpool, you’ve got Max Dowman, you’ve got JJ Gabriel at Manchester United and Jesse Derry at Chelsea.

‘Jesse Derry, I know his dad, Shaun, he’s an ex-player, but I know the kid, wow, ridiculous, not only a talent, but an actual, like, as a kid who loves, loves the game.’
