Newly released autopsy findings have revealed the horrifying extent of the injuries suffered by Grammy-nominated opera singer Jubilant Sykes before his death.
Authorities have now concluded that he was stabbed at least 78 times in an attack allegedly carried out by his own son.
The celebrated baritone died aged 71 at his home in Santa Monica, California, on December 8, 2025. His death was ruled a homicide, and his son, 32-year-old Micah Sykes, was arrested at the scene before later being charged with murder.
According to an autopsy report obtained by Us Weekly, Sykes suffered at least 73 separate wounds during the attack, including 68 sharp-force injuries and five blunt-force injuries.
The Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner determined that two weapons were used: a large curved knife with a nine-inch blade and a 10-pound dumbbell, both of which were recovered from the property.
The report also sheds new light on the terrifying moments leading up to Sykes’ death, including an account from his wife, Cecelia, who is said to have witnessed the attack. According to the documents, Cecelia was showering when she heard her husband shouting for her to call 911.
When she came downstairs, investigators say she found Micah allegedly standing over his father and repeatedly attacking him with what was described as a sharp-edged weapon.
Emergency services responded to the family’s home shortly after 9.20pm, but Sykes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Toxicology tests later found no evidence of either prescription medication or illicit drugs in the singer’s system. Micah was taken into custody at the property without incident.
During a court hearing in February, he interrupted prosecutors as they argued he should remain behind bars, insisting: ‘I don’t see my mother here… This person’s not telling the truth whatsoever.’
A judge ordered that he be held without bail while he awaits trial.
Prosecutors told the court that Cecelia had witnessed the fatal attack and was now protected by a no-contact order preventing Micah from communicating with her.
They also told the judge that Micah had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was believed to have been either under-medicated or not taking his prescribed medication at the time. Court proceedings have not determined whether his mental health affected his criminal responsibility.
In the months following the killing, reports also resurfaced of previous allegations concerning Micah’s behaviour.
A restraining order filed in 2017 alleged he had become fixated on a woman, repeatedly contacted her against her wishes and later attempted to force entry into a home. The filing also contained allegations that he had previously displayed violent behaviour toward members of his own family. Those allegations were made in court filings years before Sykes’ death and have not been tested in relation to the current criminal case.
Neighbours also told TMZ they had seen Micah wandering the area in the months before the killing, describing him as appearing distressed and shouting incoherently.
Despite those reported struggles, friends said Jubilant remained hopeful about his son’s future. One source claimed the singer had recently told others he believed Micah was ‘doing really well’.
Sykes was regarded as one of America’s leading baritones, earning a Grammy nomination for his performance on Leonard Bernstein’s Mass in 2009.
Over a career spanning decades, he performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl and London’s Barbican Centre.
Away from classical music, he also collaborated with artists including Julie Andrews, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, and Brian Wilson.
He is survived by his wife, Cecelia, and their three sons.
Micah Sykes has been charged with murder. The case remains ongoing, and he has not entered a plea.
